-- Pup Prices (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=265935)
Lap dogs and pet breeds sell for alot ... and guess what , those high prices have made it to expensive to cull and those breeds are some of the junkiest around.
Working dogs are still the most sound and healthy ... because the the culls get culled still but as the price goes up , the culling goes down .
$200-$300 for a pup from a sire with older pups on the ground doing something and a dam that is either hunted out or has pups on the ground you like ... that's a fair price.
Much more than that , and you boys can go ahead and compare yourselves to pet breeders that help turn real dogs into those illbred , disease ridden , spoiled lap dogs ...
Just stop and think about how absurd it is to justify the price of a working dog that may get culled or killed in action to what the foofoo dogs are bringing ....
If yall wanna make money and are so worried about selling pups ... just go ahead and go get a kennel of lap dogs and then you won't even have to hunt them or take a chance on not having the heart to cull an investment that won't help the breed move forward.
i look at it this way...... supply and demand i have the supply for 450.00 per pup and the person who wants the pup has the demand . if you dont want to pay 450.00 for a pup then wait till they are 6 months old and running and treeing and pay 700.00 -1000.00 take your pick.... mike

Josh, You are absolutley Right
If I want a pup from something I don't care a bit to pay top dollar. Now if I want a pup it's from a line i've saw several above average pups from that are coondogs & not just treedogs. I'll without a doubt pay top price for one & expect too. I have to admit Justin is right in someways sometimes & if he had first hand knowledge of pups from certain lines , he should expect to pay top dollar too. This is what keeps a lot of people from having sure enough coondogs & not just babbling, metooing, treeing idiots. If Justin were picking a proven cross pup here that Chris & I would show other older littermates to him, he definitley had better expect to pay a fair price & definitley had better not try to get me to drop the price or he'd be wasting a lot of his time & gas money on the trip. We are in noway high compared to a lot of people, but you get what you pay for & he should expect to & I expect to as well. I'd give absolute top dollar for the right kind of pup if I've saw first hand it was an exceptional cross of absloute top shelf coondogs & know I'd have to.

In the same token...People can ask what they want if the price is too high for ya just turn the page and keep looking.it is alot like playing the lotto, its a gamble I myself have started alot of pups, some from proven crosses, and some not, I have seen alot of great COON DOGS come from just no name dogs... I myself have posted young dogs for sale that people wouldnt buy because they were too CHEAP, they think something is wrong with them.. Point being is that there are cheap pups out there you just need to keep looking.
Doug
there r alot of cheap dogs out there but sometimes u get wat u pay for i dont mind myself to pay for the higher dog as long as it has the background alot of the cheaper pups dont have the background so jus take it as u will

everybody should do their homework before buying a pup. i agree that pups out of proven crosses should be higher. but that doesnt mean that a 400 dollar pup is going to make it. its still a gambel. and the higher the pup the less culling . it takes alot of money to raise a litter of pups now days. stud fee, vet bill, food so i guess its up to the breeder to price them. jmo

You used to could go to one of the coonhound events and get some real bargains .... I can understasnd top price for pups from really nice gyps bred to a proven sire in the stud programs .
.. but , these so-so gyps bred to something local and maybe in just the P.P. ... and the sire and dam don't have older , started pups on the ground ... that's about a $50 pup right there ... dang sure not $200-$300 .

Christy , I have bred a few litters from dogs I hunted and liked in the past ... and always gave pups away to people that would hunt them ....
200 per pup is more than enough to cover the cost of getting them to 8 weeks and out the door.
they will make money on them at that.
