Im not a breeder, but I find it interesting to read opinions on breeding.

In my experience 2 top performing dogs have no better chance of reproducing a top performer than breeding 2 medeocher dogs.

Im also very skeptical of those that feel they have breeding all figured out "in theory" but dont have anything to show in the woods.

When it comes to breeding coondogs, the advice form those that seem to always be able to have a top dog on their leash is much more valuable....and more often than not, they will claim to know very little on the subject.

Josh , what you say is mostly true .... because with coondogs , so many folks have taken sound breeding practices but because of poor judgement or poor jimminy crickets ... they have made the methods and the science look bad.

We have the science , the methods and the ability to be consistant and predict many things .... it's the judgement , culling and hunting part that is skewing our results.

If you have two top , natural born coondogs that came from the same ... it's impossible for them to throw anything else .

Breeding man-made dogs , good dogs with too many weak links or just plain culls .... that's what messes with our confidence when it comes to coondogs.

It's not a crap shoot ... and those Mendel laws of chance and crap don't apply either .

seems to me Bellar, Kiddy, Dean, Ball, Giddings, and Logan got it figured out....Always hunt what the breed and breed what the hunt...Oh yeah, their coon dogs win. Just some food for thought.

Yes, this is a common argument, but the breeding principles that are being discussed aren't magic or not secret. In fact some of the guys Steve mentions probably at least to a minimum practice many of the breeding practices discussed on this forum.

Nobody I know thinks they have every thing figured out, but not doing what one can do to make better breeding choices just doesn't make prudent sense.

it helps to have the money to buy a top hound that came out of their breeding program. very few if any breed raise and train their top hound and win with them.

SOME ONE MADE THE COMENT ABOUT ALL GRAND I ONCE HAD A ALL GRAND STUD THAT I USED IN MY PROGRAM BUT I NEW WHAT TRAITS HIS ANCESTERS THREW AND I USED THESE TO IMPROVE MY LINE AND HE WAS NOT A TOTAL OUTCROSS.
