-- Is there a more accurate breed? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=255208)

good breding breds accurate dogs put time in to your hound. It is what it is!! a great sport with tons of choices to make on the different directions 1 can go with all the great breding out there. Choose what you like hot nose cold nose and be happy with it. Hunt with a good dog and give praise where praise is due, no matter what color it is. I myself enjoy hunting with a dog that gives his all weather it be mine or someone elses. Enjoy the hunt and thank the guys from the past who produced some of them great noses.

i think that statement could be applied to just about any breed of coonhound. but thats alright. i've always rooted for the underdogs and they usually come through at some point in time. i've never been one to just go along with whats popular.
as for being easy targets thats goes for anything or anyone who does not go along with the flow and what is popular and in the majority. just shows some human natures thats all.

P.S. just kidding about the blue dogs! ive seen a few i like !

hey BUD now i know your not kidding cause all you do is make fun of them boo ticks. ive seen dogs in every breed that would tree on a toothe pick. and ive seen accurate in every breed. the only difference between breeds is some are prettier than others.

i am a walker dog man

they are good ones in all the breeds but a lot of track power has been lost in most walker lines

Posted by bluebellchopper on 02-09-2009 04:46 AM:

I

believe your right. It just seems like everyone has to go thourgh so many walkers to find a good one. Not saying their not out there because there deffinatly is great walkers out there. Now on the other hand I like a female walker but dont care to much for a male. The females make way better hunting dogs and they got more sense about em'. All the walkers around where I live make good or great pack bear dogs but as far as coon dogs more than most are very tree happy. But theres as difference in a pack dog and a HUNTING DOG. Everyone has there own opinion but I love to listen to an ole bluetick work a cold track up to a hot one and tree it; late in the winter and hike to the tree and find eyes shining back and not to walk all the way there to hear a walker chopping its head off to slick tree. How much patting up you gonna give your hound if you do that when its freezeing cold? Not trying to start a ruckus its just my opinion.

Personally I never did like Walkers mainly cuz they look like over grown beagles and since I can't stand beagles..well...there ya go. No offense to any beagle owners mind you.

Now....as far as those saying the Walker is the worst out there blah blah blah....think about it. How many Walker dogs are there? Now you also gotta think about the fact that the BEST OF THE BEST are being bred to every female out there. Now....if you over do the breeding you're gonna end up with fewer and fewer top dogs. The 'accuracy" is going to get diluted down to a point where it's gonna be hard to find.

NOW...with so called "off color" dogs who aren't "known" you don't have this problem. The genes are not so diluted and the accuracy or whatever you're looking for is there.

For good accuracy, I like to have Nailor twice and Rat Attack twice in a 3 generation pedigree. Cant go wrong there. God Bless the Walker Tree hounds.

Leopard Hounds...

-Slick Tree....Very Rarely, as a whole breed!
-Mean...I've seen three mean Leopards that's it.
-Get ém in just about any color you want except pibald.
-You can have just about any kind of mouth.
-Just about any size.
-Most all are from medium to blazing fast on track.
-Most all are sweet natured.
-Most have more than an average amount of brains.

That's the good. Here's the bad:
-There are to many man shy dogs.
-There are some that just won't hunt with stangers, not many but enough.
-Most are med. hunters and it's harder to find a Leopard that will hunt wide for those who like that.

If you get one of the really great ones, you'll never be satisfied with anything else. They have the potential to have all of the great things about hounds and curs all in one dog and it won't take ten pups to find one either. How many dogs have you went through in another breed to find a great one?

I know I haven't had to go throw that many pups to get a good one..... Can't speak for the other breeds.

I don't know all about that 1! haha... this weekend Mr. Blue and Mr. Blue Dawg were scrappling under a slick sapling while Miss. Tri-Color was a mile deep with grease hanging!

Maybe all of you should hunt a english dog maybe that will solve your slick treeing and your taking all night to get treed i went to four trees last night and saw five coons english is were the accuracy is at.

english

there are good and bad in all breeds i just prefer english because that is what i started with and i have had good luck with mine.

I like to go out bout an hour 'fore dark, get me a fire going, then at dark I turn loose my track jacking, boo around all nite Blueticks, then I sit by the fire and listen to them run in the same 5 acre area till I get tired and go to sleep, then in the morn, I go pull them off the track and head back home.

Then some weekends I go out with my buddies and run theyre triple Rat attack/ Nailor dogs and we usually need to have about 6 extra bulbs a piece for our lights, cause we spend alot of time shining trees. When we get done shining the tree, we always pet them up real good, cause they did such a good job treeing. They usually tree about every other tree in this 5 acre area, so we dont bother with tracking collars. Sometimes my friends real good hounds will beat the coon to the tree. He says it runs in the family line. It takes a heck of a track dog to do this. Thats prolly why all these walkers are winning all the time. I sure wish my Blueticks were that good of track dogs.

yes

like for example rat attack dogs are not near as accurate as something like sacket bred dogs

This cracks me up. WE ALL know there are great dogs in every breed. There are way more walkers than anything else, so naturally there are more bad ones, as well as good ones. I hunt walkers and have two that will run a track faster than any dog they have ever hunted with and have the coon 9 out of 10 times (in a hunt last weekend my male smoked 2 black dogs and a blue dog lol, had to throw that in there) But seriously, i'm not partial to any breed, i just want a good coon dog, heck i think a good looking bluetick is one of the prettiest dogs there are. Bloodlines play a major role, but so does the handler, what kind of territory the dog is trained in, the amount of coons,etc.....Breed probably has the least to do with it.
