Black Gold prices fluctuate alot due to the not having a set formula or "recipe". They vary depending on the price of materials at the time of manufacturing.

I tried River Run a long time ago and it did exactly that..... Run like a river through my dogs and I had to feed more to try to get the same results which I didnt.

I used to feed Black Gold Signature Series 31/21. It is an excellent feed but I refuse to deal with their outrageous price increases any more. I've been doing tons of research and trying different foods for a while. You name it, we've tried it. I came up with one food that stands far above the rest in all areas, including cost when you figure in the amount you have to feed. NATIVE made by Kent feeds is the best I've ever seen.

Yeah I am also thinking of switching from Black and Gold to something else. It does not sound like I pay nearly as much as some of your guy's and gal's do around the country. But 2 bags run me $40 and some change every couple weeks. You do that twice a month to feed four hounds and a cur..it adds up quick!I really promoted the feed in our small town and finally got our local coop. to carry it. They seem to move a lot of the feed, but they have said sales were down. When prices went from $14.00 to almost $19.00 a bag??? That is hard to swallow!! If it continues to raise I might switch to Diamond Hi-protein 50lb $15.00 a bag at Orschelns or Purina Dog Chow is 50lb bag...$19.00 at Wal-Mart. Dogs seem tohave more stool on the Diamond, plus their past problems scare me a little. As for Purina, I never have really feed it, but sounds like a great feed.
As for the B&G being a little different here lately I would have to agree. I have noticed the look of the feed looks different bag to bag lately. Also I have noticed the hounds having looser stools occasionally the past few months? We will all just have to keep a eye on rising prices and hope the prices of feed does not factor in how many hounds you keep any more than it has.

I asked this same question and the reason the rep gave me was that Diamond is a bigger company and was able to hold out on price increases longer than the smaller comapnies. He said that Diamond will be going up in the near future too.

I had never heard of this until a few months ago. One of the guys I hunt used to feed it until he couldn't get it locally anymore. He said hid dogs did great on it. Also, we have coon pen in the area and this guy has a mess of dogs and this is what he feeds. He gets it by the pallett so we're trying to work something out with him. If it goes through I might give it a try.

Any one tried the CMF dog food?

I feed black gold 26-18 for a yr till the supplier said he could not afford the gas and the price increases.

I switched to CMF 26-18 and the stools have been great but they seem to drink a lot more water!! My buddy bought two more bags of the CMF 26-18 last week and said the color and the shape was different compared to the first four bags he bought. Just wondering if anyone else has tried this brand..

I bought one bag of black gold last fall. I always wanted to try it and I wasn't disappointed. It was 20 something a bag. The next time I went back the store was out and I can't have that. I looked around and made a call to a place carrying Ultra Advantage. They make a run up this way and BRING THE FOOD TO ME from 90 miles away for $20 a bad for the Supreme High Energy. It is at least as good as the Black Gold and this company has just been great.

Thank you EARL'S VET AND SUPPLY COLUMBIA MO!!!

I heard several dog owners went together and are suing Diamond for the wheat germ deal that killed some dogs. Can't be good for business.

DOG FOOD

GUNPOWER I FEED DIOMOND AND SELL FOR 17 DOLARS IV FED IT FOR 9 YEARS AND HAVENT HAD A PROBLEM ITS GOOD FOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Gunpowder on 02-06-2008 03:25 PM:

Maniac-Don't doubt it.

My 1st cousin feeds it in his boarding kennel. We talked about feeds @ Christmas. I told him I felt it was a top tier food along with Black Gold & Purina.

I just mean that they may have some tough time ahead if the lawsuit goes well. Bad supply chain can happen to any manufacturer. It is how they handle the situation that ensures their survival or death as a business.

I did take notice that he had called Diamond to inquire about being a distributer and they didn't bother to call back.

Posted by mvstony on 02-06-2008 03:45 PM:

Black Gold

The cost of any dog food has to go up, all grains and proteins are up considerably over the last year and the only variation of increase is going to be based on quality of the feed. Not to mention what fuel prices have done in the last year and everything that goes into dog food has to be shipped some from somewhere. If a company has a fixed or closed formula, like Black Gold, the ingredients never change, the feed is consistent, and the price can change more drastically. If a feed has an open formulation, and alot of the feeds mentioned here have that, the ingredients can change from batch to batch and you really could be feeding a different feed each time buying the same feed. That is why you see inconsistencies in feeds. Personally, as a distributor and retail dealer, I would rather have to listen to complaints about a price increase than complaints about quality. I have been in the feed business for nearly 30 years and I have never seen a product with the consistency of Black Gold. As well, I have never had a branded product sell itself the way this feed has. Anyone who understands nutrition, animal health and coat quality can see that it works better than most brands.

Nice reply mvstony, Black Gold has been getting Hammered for there price increases, There ingredient prices have doubled in the last 3 Years. If anybody has a problem with there Feed please call John or Don Allen, they are at the office and will listen to any concerns you have 1-800- 598- 3647. I find it funny that some people will spend $30 -39 for a 37 pound bag and others cry like hell when they have to spend $ 20 for a 50 pound bag. Black Gold can't be beat at Price per pound. There are 3 things in the Dog food business 1) Price 2) Quality 3) service. You can't have all 3, Black Gold has Quality and Service.

Black Gold prices.

Please remember that the feeds you are comparing are mostly not premium dog foods as well as not national brands. You also must bear in mind what all Black Gold does for hunters of all kinds. Please go to the website www.blackgolddogfood.com and look at all the sponsorship programs Black Gold does for you. Please understand that none of this comes free.

Please keep us posted on what Allen finds out for you. I've been feeding Black Gold since the early fall, and was very impressed by the results I got. Recently, I opened 2 different bags that smelled "strong". Not in a bad way, just a strong dog food kind of smell. I didn't think anything of it, but after just a few days my dogs got VERY loose stools, and had to go often. Two dogs had complete liquid for stool and very messy. Those 2 dogs are both female, one is 9 years old and one is 8 months old. I have 2 dogs inside, and 3 dogs outside in kennels and all 5 were pretty much the same. The indoor ones have been scratching on the front door to go out alot more than normal. Yes, I'm on a good worming schedule. My method of feeding is simple, I feed according to how the dog looks weight wise, and how much stool I see in the kennel. I dont like fat dogs or alot of mess to clean up. When it's really cold out they get a little bit more than normal but not much. Anyway, I used up the strong smelling bag and then next bag I opened smelled more normal, the dogs stools immediately firmed up. The bag I just opened had that smell again, and the loose stools came back. I'm convinced that the stronger than normal smell is the cause, and am very curious as to whats going on.

To clarify, I like Black Gold feed alot...both in unit price and what the results are when the product is "on". I also like what the company does for our sport. I'm in no way saying it's not good feed, but I do hope to get to the bottom of this. Personally I think it's probably more of a QC issue, where there's a mixing issue of some sort either with the fat or flavoring. I'm looking forward to hearing what Black Gold discovers.

i have feed black gold for three years and switched a few months ago to sportmix hated it didn't keep the weight on the dogs so i switched back sport mix and black gold are the same price here. but i dont' see why everyone complains about black gold prices look at what they do for our sport like two other people outta the three pages of reply's have said look at how much time money and effort they put into helping our sport and sponsoring our sport the only other feed i see helping out is purina and purina is a good feed but i will stick with black gold. like they say if it isn't broke don't fix it.
