english

They do not work off line of sight, the signal goes to the sattelite and then to the GPS. I have one ordered that hopefully should be here tomorrow and then I am going to give it a try. We have some pretty deep rough ravines and hills on our place. We are also in NE Ga (Hartwell) if you want to play with it after I get it going your welcome to come hunt with us, I bought three collars to start with so we can see if it works well or not. The good news is a 30 day no llike return if it doesnt do well.

cara i looked at the garmin web site after your post and this is what they say.

"you can track dogs at a distance of up to five miles away (depending on terrain). the system transmits information by line of sight, so it reaches farthest in flat open territory."

thats what their ad says word for word (i dont know how to copy and paste). here is the web address www.garmin.com.

i will pm you in a week or so about going huntin, i live over close to cleveland in white county we generally get over that way and hunt the wma once a year.

topo maps

What size card would you recommend and how much mapping would a single 1G or 2G card hold?
That google Earth feature looks great, I had no idea it could do that. I have noly had mine a couple months, and still don't know 1/2 the features it has. Great unit for information if you ask me.
Godspeed,

I have a 1 GB card in mine. I think that should hold about everything you want.

new unit

Got mine yesterday. I was amazed at how good it worked. It tracked my two girls the entire time through some very thick stuff in elevations that changed up and down by over 100 ft. They were also in some very thick cover areas, pines and hardwoods (we still have leaves) and through some really nasty briars down along the creeks. It lost signal three or four times for a second and then resumed. When it said they were treed we could not hear as they were to far away. We drove the ATV as close as we could, walked direct to them and they were there, treed with Mr Coon overhead. So far they are better than expected. This morning I downloaded the track and you could see exactly where they went and what they did layed over the topo map. Still have lots to learn but I would say it did a lot better job than my other tracker far more precise.

ok, this is only to the smart folks, lol, Can you only download the topo onto the handheld in 10 sq mi blocks? Please tell me I'm wrong! If so, how many of these blocks will a 2 meg card hold? Thanks!

Brad,

I down loaded all of Indiana, Southern Michigan, and nothwestern Ohio on my 1GB card. I still have room if I want to add maps.

If I travel to another area, I just have to make sure to add the maps near where I'm going to be, I figure a 200 mile radius should do me.....

I still have plenty of room....after all, the CD holds 3GB with all maps and the program....so I figure 2GB should hold a LOT of maps.

A friend of mine used his on my dog and I was happy with it. As far as duribility I can't say a thing though. I only had it on a dog one night. My cur is silent on track. We were able to track her exact location at all times with this. I could tell when she was tracking and looking for a track just by watching her on the GPS. It tells you how your dog is hunting. Even if your dog is open on track it's fun to watch how the dog hunts and looks for a track. If you have a dog that checks back, how far does the dog go before it comes back? For me it is not nessisary to track my dog in that manner, but the use of the GPS leaving me a bread crumb trail to not get lost might be worth the expence. I can see the use of it helping to find your dog faster. With a radio tracker, I get an idea of the dogs location, but that's it. You can learn alot from your dog with the GPS tracking.

yes the collar gets its reading from satellites then in sends the information to the hand held unit , and yes it will pick up a signal in any cover, it even picks up the satellites from inside a building !! it is by far the strongest gps i have ever seen , it sends its signal from the collar to the hand held unit by way of uhf-vhf ? not sure which one thus the reason for loosing communication with you dog, but the collar keeps getting signal , it will say lost communication with dog , but it will tell you where and how far the last place it recieved a signal from your collar, then all you have to do is precide towards the dog and it will pick up communication again, i have been useing mine for 3 months all over the country and it has never not picked up from the hand held unit anywhere, thick cover has never been an issue, it has a range between 1 and 3 miles but they also have a antenna that goes on the roof of your truck (magnetic) and it will about double the range, but i have never had to use it, and like i said if you do lose contact with your dog all you have to do is go towards the last place it picked up the dog and it will lock in again, all the features are incredable i for one will never use anything but a gps tracker again, if you arent sure about them just ask someone that has one to show you how it works !!! you will be amazed !!!!

Booboo,

If you don't already have the card, and you know the maps that you want to use, I would get the pre-loaded map cards from Garmin.....that way, all you have to do in insert the memory card, and you don't have to buy what you don't need, along with loading maps......

I think they sell for around 80.00, which is cheaper than buying the map software, plus you have the cost of the memory card.

Hobo,
the issue with range is the line of sight transmission between reciever and transmitter

if the line of site transmission is out of range, does it switch over to satelite automatic?....and how does that affect the way you track them?...can you still pinpoint your dog if its way out of line of site range?

has anyone heard when and if they are coming out with a better collar set up?....i dont want to buy one and then they start selling a new and improved system a month later...lol
