Dan it was hot but it was plumb miserable tonight got permission to hunt a little farm this week and since I had made a day with the hounds I thought well it's a good water hollow plenty of water for the dogs it's hot they probably want hunt anyway l would just check it out dropped Sam Storm and Avalon right up the branch my goodness what a racket done dropped on one red hot even Avalon is opening kinda here comes Storm back than Avalon squalling like something is killing her but Sam is still up the hollow and raising cain but not moving good grief what's going on up the branch I go whatever it is Storm and Avalon want no part of it and an't going back with me the big chickens but Sam sounds like she is in trouble and she was she had 250 pounds of pure terror that was as mad as the devil blowing snarling showing them pearly whites and popping them like thunder all the while there was a high pitched bawling going on coming from up under the bank dang cub Sam was between it and Momma for instance there I thought me Sam both were about to get it only thing I can figure the cub must have been hanging out on the creek playing and I turned loose on it they bayed it than here came the big bad Momma to protect her baby it sure was some kind of racket but it all happened so fast I mean off the tailgate fast when it all got calmed down I realized just how hot it was I was soaking wet and hadn't walked much more than 50 yards poor Sam she was so hot when it was all over and Momma and baby had gone on she just layed down in the branch I was tempted to join her

Dan and WB it was good to meet you guys. WB, thanks for lettting Caleb show Storm. He was real proud of his trophy. As soon as we got home I had to build him a bench so he could start practicing with his dog. I new as soon as he got a taste he would be hooked.
WB, As soon as it cools off come on up we will try the corn fields.
Dan, Caleb would not have cared what color dog he got to show. He was just happy to have been able to join in. We both had a good time.

JR...glad Caleb had a good time showing. We had Ruby to a bench show and they announced kids could show if they had a dog. We let a boy put her in. They got trophies, too. He was all smiles. His dad said he'd probably have to get him a pup.

Chuck has only had 2 bear encounters while hunting. One was yrs ago with Driz. She started treeing and he headed toward her. He said all at once something roared loud enough to shake the trees! He started running toward Driz, but she went running by him to the truck. That dog was NO dummy She was waiting at the truck when he got there. The other was 2 summers ago in r sweet corn. Ruby was almost nose to nose with one. I didn't go along, but was standing at the house. Ruby let out one big bawl and I heard Chuck holler "bear" then he kept saying 🐻 as he came down thru the yd. Ruby not quite as bright as Driz, had to be pulled down by the collar. When they got to the house, I had to rub it in that when I spotted earlier that night and thought I saw a bear that because he didn't see it that there were "No bears around"

I was wondering the same thing. I can eat bear...but not a favorite. Never heard of anyone trying porcupines.

We had 4 bears come into r fisher traps last yr about a mile away....they probably come around here sometimes.

My buddy and I went out for a long ride yesterday, the bunnies were reclusive, the ptarmies were flighty, but, we came upon a clutch of Porkies and I had heard for years how good they were to eat and I was itching for some fresh meat and a little diversity from my moose/grouse/salmon diet. So, we took one and skinned it out, gave the pelt to friends for handicrafts, but, I am curious as to the best way to cook it up. The flesh seems very very tender and dark red....and the animal was the least stinky thing, inside and out that I have ever processed so my hopes are very very high, just lookin for some ideas from those who have eaten one of these guys and how best to do it. Haven't eaten them in years because of location, but did so regularly most of my life. We ate them any of three ways most of the time.

For big groups we stuffed the chest cavity with dressing and veggies just like a turkey, but covered the whole works with foil for baking to keep it from drying out. About a half hour before serving, pull off the foil, brush with butter, turn up the heat and brown lightly.

If you cut them up more or less like a chicken, roll the pieces in flour, dip them in egg, then roll them in cracker crumbs and fry like chicken. The cracker crumbs won't stick if you don't do the flour and egg thing first.

Finally we would fillet the meat off, cut it in strips and chunks and do much the same thing, turning out something like "chicken tenders" in the process. Last time we did it, I experimented with Shake and Bake and the oven rather than frying, and I have to say it was probably better due to the seasonings.

Don't remember the details, but my grandmother used to use it instead of chicken in "chicken and dumplings" and in pot pies. Really good, and the memory makes me wish I lived a little closer to porkies once again!

One way I used to cook them was stick the cut up meat, after marinating them for a few hours, was to stick them in the barrel stove on a grate after the fire had died way down, leaving the damper wide open. This tended to take away the gamey taste, especially on winter porkies, who are eating more spruce needles and spruce bark than during the milder months.

Growing up in the Upper peninnusla of Michigan we had lots of porkies and my grand mother prefeered them to just about any other meal. Roastig or frying them works great but do'nt forget stewed yummmy. And you have'nt eaten till you've had porkie pasties( a little round finlander meat pie)
1) Grind up the meat. 2) Add cubed carrots potatoes rootabaga(gotta have this one no substitutions allowed, pastie pureists say the vegies should be shreded on a coarse chess grater) and alittle onion.3) Add salt and peper and just enough lard to make the ingreediance stick together(dont over do this one).4) Put a softball size portion of the mixture on a pie crust fold the crust over the mixture and pinch edges closed.5) Bake at 325 till crust is nice golden brown color. About 45min to an hour depending on how big you make them you can ussually get 6-8 pasties out of a nice size porkie.

This recipe works for any game meat especially venison. I made venison hart pasties for my wife and I on our secound date. It was x-mass time and Rudalph the red nosed raindeer was on the tube while we were eating My wife said "I supose I should feel alittle guilty but I just cant these are soo good."
