what next?
I know a guy should wait till his pup is close to a year old to get started but it's hard to do when you want to get in the woods and enjoy some hound music. Blue Ivy is right at 8 months old and I couldn't wait any longer. I showed her a caged coon during daylight hours and she did what most dogs will do, she barked at it. I pulled it up in a tree and she treed some but not a lot. So my next step was to lay down a fresh kill drag (I know a young man thats a trapper) during daylight hours and she tracked and found the tree but did not tree it. I let the coon down and started dragging it and she went nuts barking, grabbed it ,shook it around and chewed on it. I then went back to the tree and pulled it up again and she treed only briefly. Since then on our nightly walks in the woods behind the house she has gotten to where she is hunting most of the time, nose on the ground and nose in the air and when she winds something she is gone for a few minutes and comes back. She has opened on track once. My question is should I keep messing with her or let her get a little more age on her? I would love to take her to the hill farm but there is to many bad habits to chase around up there and I don't want to shock her yet. But I have no doubt her wheels are turning now. Any suggestions? A few more cage coons? Turn loose coons?
Thanks,
Robert
I would stick with a turn loose coon till she gets to running and treeing both. That won't keep her from starting bad habits later but at least she'll remember what she got praised for doing right. You can't break one for doing wrong until they know what you want them to do right.
It's the absolute wrong time of year to be hunting one that young very hard. They'll loose more confidence than they'll ever gain on the rough tracks she'll get on right now. Stick with caged coon for now. When the kitten coon come out in a few months she'll be ready to start hunting and mature enough to take it!

I was wondering if your dog jack or the line of dogs jack comes from chew much at the tree. I have a half brother to your jack dog he's a great coondog his only two faults is he's 7 years old and the longer he trees the more he chews. I was also wondering if they pass this trait on if I was to bred him. Thanks chad

I am getting some good reports on the Boone pups that I raised last year.
I hear good things about Boone.... I'm hunting a 21month old out of Steve's Johnny Reb dog that's turning the crank!
