Larry, nobody breeds to a SS sire because they think being SS will make the pups better. The only reason you breed to a SS sire is because you can't play the game if your pup isn't in the program. It's as simple as that.

Just consider the numbers, based on recent numbers (278 pups Thursday, 310 pups Friday), it probably is a safe estimate that only about 650 pups actually hunt the SS. If 10,000 pups are enrolled in the program that means there is a 6% chance that you will hunt in the SS. If the total pups enrolled is 20,000, then you only have 3% chance to hunt in the hunt. Now, figure the odds of winning or placing high enough to offset your expenses. Those odds are pretty darn high.

I just don't understand the mentality that a dog will only reproduce if it is a SS sire. That dog's genes don't know whether or not it is a SS sire. That dog's genes doesn't care that the only thing it takes to become a SS sire is for the owner to shell out money.

Now, with that said, i don't have a problem with those that can afford the SS program to enjoy the program. If you have the mean great. Me, I don't have the means.

ALL pups out of a SS sire can hunt in the hunt if they are good enough to win. All have the chance to qualify. 100%

I know alot of people find the SS really important. Myself I don't really care wether it is or it ain't. I'm not going to the SS any time in the near future anyways.

Howdy Mr. Silcox,

See the thing is if I did have a SS pup and it was good enough to compete, I still wouldn't. I don't have the means. I can't afford it. I don't play the lottery either.

Plan on takin 2 next year. If I can find another handler, I will have one in the baby stakes also.

larry

i think you know as well as the rest of us that out of all those 10,000 pups a small percintage of them are really given a chance when they are young this will be true for the performance program as well......its a small price to pay for the pup of a life time..............
the hard core comp. hunter will settle for nothing less..........by the way how have you been doing.....

I like the ss program perosnally

I'm a yes voter, the SS program is what drew me back into coon hunting again..

I like to hunt young dogs, I don't much care for nite hunts.

I figure a puppy type hunt would be less head aches than drawing out with someone's 8 yr old alligator with 9 2nd place wins..

My first SS pup has been a pleasure to hunt and is ready to go..

Going to my first pup derby Friday night..

Maybe I'll have a different opnion of the program after that!!

I will let you know..

have a good night

Super Stakes?

Doesn't matter to me.

I coonhunt for pleasure. I work for money (but I do like my work).

Pursuing the Superstakes Purse (which isn't really that big when you put it in perspective) requires a major outlay of both time and money. That's pretty hard to justify when you have a wife and young child at home. In my situation, having a wife, family, and job, it would be irresponsible of me to even think about the Superstakes.

It may be OK for some. But, it's too much of a sacrifice for someone with a wife and family, and job responsibilities!

I PREFER ONE TO BE SS. BUT IT DOESNT MAKE IT A BETTER DOG BY BEING SS. THE ONLY DIFFERANCE IS MONEY.
IF YOU HAVE A SS PUP AND IT IS VERY VERY EXCEPTIONAL. YOU DONT HAVE TIME TO HUNT IT I THE SS BUT YOU NEED A NEW ROOF ON YOUR HOUSE OR YOUR CAR IS ON ITS LAST LEG. THE PUP WILL SUPLY YOUR NEEDS BY SELLING IT.
NOW YOUR PUP IS JUST A UKC -PKC REG PUP. IT WILL SELL JUST DONT EXPECT A NEW ROOF OR ANOTHER CAR.

IF IM GOING TO PUT MY TIME IN ALL THAT IT TAKES TO MAKE A PUP DO WHAT IT WAS BORN TO DO.
WE ALL GET IN A TIGHT EVERY NOW AND THEN....I WANT TO SELL THE PUP FOR VERY GOOD MONEY TO PAY FOR MY TIME. IT DONT COST ANYMORE TO TRAIN EITHER.

A VERY VERY NICE PUP THAT IS SS(3000 TO 10000)
A VERY VERY NICE REG PUP NOT SS OR PER...(500 TO 1500)
YOU MAKE THE CALL
ILL TAKE THE SS AND PER PUPS

Joe,

I wasnt aiming anything at you, I just explained my answer to the pole.

I dont have anything against the SS Hounds, Just dosent make alot of diference, to me because Im not a Competition hunter.
If your a Walker Man, Ive got a Reproducer here, that would probably make you some winning pups, but he is just a Single Registered Coondog, and nobody wants that. But Me, LOL

Good Luck with your Competiton hunting, and Thank you, its people like you, that keep our sport alive, If no one did what you do, It would probably be Illegal to hunt at nite with a Hound. Thanks, My Friend.

It does'nt matter to me, here's how i look at it. I hunt for the enjoyment of being out in the woods listening to hounds work a good track. I dont care what color the dog is or if he's superstakes or not. if the dog will do what it's supposed to do, i'll pay money for it. superstakes does'nt mean your dog is going to go and slam you a coon everytime.

It sure dont but if it does. You or me either one has just as good of a chance to take em to the big show and win around 17000 dollars as anyone else. One want live at my house thats not SS!!!!!!It takes hard work and lots of time to train any of them.So I might as well be training one that is.

One of the best dogs i ever had was a redtick female without papers, untill sombody shot her. If i bought a pup that was superstake great if not oh well.here's you a ? let's say theres two dogs your interested in. both dogs are one year old, one dog from good bloodlines not superstakes, the other is from a great bloodline that is superstakes. you go and try out the first dog and all three drops was quick trees with the meat seen in all three trees. now you go and try the 2nd dog you make three drops and he looked stupid in all three drops(slicktreeing, licking his butt, and chasing his tell) if you had to get one of these dogs which would it be? I seen a dog one time at a UKC hunt that chased his tail when he was turned loose, that was funny.

people dont buy superstake puppies cause they think it will make them a better dog, only an idiot would think that, they buy ss pups incase they TURN OUT to be a good dog. the SS is the most exiciting hunt out there

Well said.

Of those that say they won't own a pup or breed a female unless its SS, how many have actually hunted in the Superstakes? Of those that actually hunted in the Superstakes, how many have won anything? My point is, its a lottery with fairly long odds. The Superstake program is designed with the big stud dog men in mind. Breed a bunch of females and get a few pups to turn out and they'll look good. For the man that breeds 1-3 females a year, its a poor finanical decision to pay up his stud.

I don't mind having the SS and I'll breed to a SS sire over one that isn't, if everything else is equal. I'll pay up a pup, if eligible.

I have no problem selling pups that aren't SS eligible. The one place where I think it does make a difference is in the price you can get for a nice started young dog. If he's SS paid up, he's worth more, no question about it.

The UKC perf. program is a whole different story. It pays based on the lifetime accomplishments of the dog in all UKC hunts, not just a couple big hunts. Plus, the UKCPP is cheaper to get in to. While it hasn't gotten to the point that people are seeing the future of this, I'm rapidly getting to the point that I won't breed to a stud thats not a UKC perf. sire because of what I see this program evolving in to.

Like I said before. If I'm gonna be hunting a pup it will be SS!!!!! I myself am not gonna get to see the good non SS 1yr old go.Not even worth my time to go look if its not SS!!! NO WAY whatsoever I'd buy a year old thats not SS.I'd just wait till I found one I liked that was SS.
