Everyone help me.. I thought the 8 was used when they were out of hearing and on a track... with positive strike points.

Isn't' this situation: The dog would have positive strike points, and then negative tree points for leaving the tree? And if so- the 8 wouldn't be relevant here would it? I would assume the handler could ask for a time out to catch his dog before dogs are re cast again.

Even though the dog left the tree and received minus tree points, his strike is still active and has to be accounted for.

There's only one way to handle this situation. Go to the last place the dog was heard opening and start the 8. It's up to the handler to stand there or walk. Remember it's his dogs strike points on the line so he can go where he wants. This misconception of "looking" at a garmin is totally irrelevant. Of course and handler that's been in more then 2 hunts will clearly use the tool that's allowed to use to walk toward his dog to try to get closer. The gamin will not make the dog bark.
