Not very often

Donald I agree with that, but some people seem to think a dog is wrong when he trees on a den. When I was young and climbed trees, I looked in a lot of trees. I found coon in a lot of them, but maybe my dogs were not quite so tree minded back then.

Last few coon dogs I had I didn’t praise up much at a den tree unless I could see the coon.

That's 2 pictures I took about 40 years ago when I could still get off the ground.

The pictures have faded. When first developed you could see the dogs treeing below. That's two different trees.

Den trees

My first thought on getting too many dens: "Is the dog running a backtrack?" You can usually tell.

But, if coon aren't moving, they will hang close to their dens (tree or hole in the ground).

Also, if a coon is being pursued, it will often head for refuge (den tree, hole in the ground, etc.).

If you've harvested coon off a den, hole, rock bank, etc. you'd notice that they tend to be older and larger than average. Smarter coon?
