Dave,

Sounds like your friend Ron has been blessed to have been able to hunt into his eighties. Not many make it through the 70’s in this sport from what I have experienced.

Give thanks for the many good nights and times you’ve had together. My guess is you’ve had the best years of coon hunting to be had! Much has changed in a short time period. Places to free cast hounds continues to diminish. More people who have no tolerance for the sport we hound men enjoy are determined to legislate us out of existence.

Here in the northeast, in this time of Covid frenzy, people are moving north out of the big cities. Our way of living for decades is rapidly being changed. For years we have been able to hunt on unposted private property with very minimal objection from property owners. Now when large pieces of property are sold the posted signs go up before occupancy occurs. Combine that with their so called “politically correct” ambitions being rammed down our throats and the future for us hound people has a different hue than it once did.

Dan, you are so correct, I have seen so much changeover these past 50 years of coon hunting. We never seen a posted sign when we were younger, not so today. Logging has ruined thousands of acres that we used to hunt. Times sure have changed for the worse. We have been blessed over the years in many ways. Ron has been a tough old bird and he loves coon hunting, with him coon hunting has been a way of life not just a hobby. I have always said that when the day comes that he can not coon hunt, his time on earth will be short. I sure hope he gets well enough both physically and mentally to coon hunt as much as he can. Our days of hunting 6 nights a week and long hours are over, but I hope we can hunt a few nights a week and a few hours each night. We may have to hunt out of state in the flat land, as both of us are starting to struggle mighty with these mountains. There is not any easy hunting in our country. A 500 yard tree is hard to get to in most cases. Big difference in a willing mind and a willing body as both of us are experiencing. Happy hunting to ALL. Dave p.s. To paraphrase a country song, I know what Ron wants "just 5 more nights of coon hunting"
