-- Mange ? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928538580)
.
Any change or improvement to the dogs condition?
Don't want to sound redundant but in my opinion this is the most simplest thing to understand. At the same time, perhaps the most difficult to get a handle on.
The issue is a MITE. It is a mite many dogs have. The outcome and condition of the dog is determined by the dogs resistance to the mite. (immune system).
Yes the mite has to be removed from the dog and his bedding. The dog needs some type of medication to do that and several have been mentioned here. I know what I would do, but reserve giving medication info. I am not a vet and you need either some expensive medication or cheaper medication in large doses. Both can cause the dog to have a reaction. But it has to be done. Once secondary infections starts the immune system is stressed even more. It is a uphill battle and medication and age can solve the issue.
Kind of like a horrific flea infestation. You have to break the flea cycle. You have to take care of the dog, the bedding and the local yard/environment. Unless you break the cycle you're scratching your head. Once you break the cycle. You're scratching your head, wondering where the problem went.

Mange is contagious . So some having it and others not don't mean any thing at this point I guess.
But what I am scratching my head over is you saying it is only on legs and bottom side. I only seen mangey animals a few times. But they had it all over.
Have you had to vet to verify it is mange?
I keep wanting to think it is the bedding (Straw)or a feed allergy
And they can get those mites out of your straw. so you might treat. Put new straw in and just reinfesting them.

When given ivomec (Ivermectin) several times one week or 10 days apart it will break the life cycle of the mites...you just need to be patient and the wormer medicine will do the work...initially it will kill the mature mites that are laying eggs and then it will get those hatchlings before they are mature enough to lay eggs...if it is mange...

Mange
One is finally starting to grow hair back very well. Other is started to get alittle back and less red. 3rd has got worse. Seems to be a course of 5 wks of hair loss before regrowth. All got rebedded and powder but in kennels.

I had a female I treated for mange for years. Finally found out it was a flea allergy. And it only took a few fleas to cause her hair to fall out.
