-- SETWD’s Attendance? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928527825)

John how can you say the attendance has not dropped by a huge amount every since the first year? Vendors that use to be at every setwds the last twenty years stopped coming to years ago. It wasn’t worth their time and effort to come and set everything up for such small crowds.

For the record I do not mind the extra hour and half ride it gave me by moving. I’ve also never said it needed back in Salisbury, BUT it does need to be moved somewhere that has enough motels and nice restaurants.

Dennis never said this event hasnt dropped but I have been to the same events held by the same associations at the same time of the year and very very few of them..Actually about every one of them have dropped..Been to some maybe 20 times..Some dont actually exist anymore..If we dont support the ones that have the tenancity to try we are all doomed...These fellows work as hard as any bunch in the country on this event and the one they hold in december..Im not saying i wouldnt love it in my backyard but I have seen the behind scenes work..Many dont know and you wont here anyone say it but the gentleman that won all four cast was actually working the gate one morning also at just past 7 am..These guys that said the vendors were down may be right in numbers but they have no idea with internet sales how these folks are still keeping afloat..I wish I had a cure all but Im afraid their is not one..I hope the squirrel world hunt will be held in conjunction with this event.

With competing kennel clubs and young people not coon hunting the numbers are going to go down. I fox hunt also the hunt we hold used to draw around 400 hounds 30 years ago the same hunt draws around 60 dogs now.

Also not sure why no one took any pictures but this fairgrounds is much larger ...When the show people started arriving the far end was covered up with vehicles, the guys who like to trade were five steps off newly paved asphalt with a bunch of their dogs they were dealing..I got to walk real quick early down that lane and managed to purchase a few items I thought i needed ..Im gonna support this hunt and a bunch more no matter where they are held..Autumn Oaks is another big one falling off bad as is Orangeburg for that matter But we might be better enjoying what we have left while we can..I wish good hunting to everyone!!

Tim I know this part is falling off real bad just like our magazine is..Everyone has a stud now and seem to put them facebook just like their stud ads...You are also going to see less vendors instead of more..Its just not because of this hunt but Im afraid we are a dying breed..

Clovis you are correct..Even the beaglers around here are less and less..After deer season went out with dogs it wasnt a saturday around here that you didnt hear beagles running..This year I saw about four guys running dogs..Its plum sad sad !!

Years ago lots of people had a few beagles to rabbit hunt after deer season. Now I don't know 1 single person who rabbit hunts and your hunting club is loaded with rabbits.

Posted by Clovis A Nailor on 03-02-2020 12:12 AM:

But the older I get I think 5 or 6 beagles are looking better to me than my tree dogs. I could just sit on my tailgate and listen to them run .

Im doing the squirrel dog thing myself and will be looking couple beagles here soon ..Kept one big dog that I can cut and tree a coon with and wish sometimes he would tree a squirrel ..We had three young men trying to coonhunt here for the first time and cant remember that happening in a few years so trying to help them anyway I can.

Look I love this hunt as much or more than anyone and have supported it for 27 years and will continue to, anything I can do to help I will but the picture your painting is not tru, last year the stud barn went from $30 per spot to $50 and the trade lot was still $30 that sent a lot of people home, this year it was $30, the 1st year there we had 16 studs, next year we had 7, then 4, last year 2, this year 2, it’s tuff sitting in that barn for 2 days an maybe 20 people come tru, I have not set up in 2 years for lack of people, moving it may be a good idea and then if it the numbers don’t come back I will except your theory that it’s social media.

I used to be on sickum to head to a major hunt knowing I had to be back at work on Monday. Things went south down here many years ago don’t think it’s coming back but in that time other folks including me found out there are other outdoor activity’s that are a lot of fun to do besides coonhunt. It would take a representative and the company would have to invest time and money to bring it back. People got tired of taking money out of their own pocket to make it work.

I just spent my money at whataburger and I feel good about it.

That's NOT the problem here Tar, The setwa has plenty of money in their bank account. There are two huge problems with this hunt now. the major one is the location it just doesn't have enough motels in town or nice places to eat.. Second once the Purina points went away from the hunt lots of big name guys stopped attending it. Moving it to a little better location would help for sure. I'm in no way knocking the fairgrounds as I think most of the buildings are nicer than what they had in Salisbury.

Union pays SATWA $10,000 per year, it don’t matter if anyone shows up they still get paid!

When you can hunt for a new pickup where do you think the big boys are going to hunt?

Posted by HOBO on 03-02-2020 01:09 AM:

There has always been a pkc hunt pretty close to SETWD's and it never hurt the draw before.

Tim dont think I havent screamed about the set up fee ..My spot was 500.00 paid at Orangeburg in advance then a rental tent..Never have I said that couldnt be cheaper ...and here me say it again..Never have I said that could not be cheaper ..Paid the North carolina set up fee while there which is very very modest but most years it conflicted with other dates so its a donation if we cant attend.

Well the two hunts that we always looked forward to was ada Oklahoma which they got everything they need except hunting places the only way it ever worked people took cast out of town I brought cast down here 65 miles every year we hunted 300 dogs a night due to some bad decision making they basically ticked off all their help now they hunt 30 dogs a night.

The Texas state hunt was over 300 dogs a night and when they moved it to Madisonville tx it tanked now it’s back at Fairfield tx but while it was gone they lost a lot of guides sometimes change is not good.

I live a lot closer to Union than Salisbury but Salisbury to me had better hunting and definitely had better motels and food. To me I see less people every year at union

Posted by houndsound on 03-02-2020 06:41 AM:

I suspect the reasons participants, vendors, and stud barn dogs are all down for two reasons... One, there is probably less people coon hunting then there was 20 years ago

But the biggest reason I would suspect is that competition hunts, shopping vendors, looking at stud papers, etc... Are all really forms of community- sharing a passion with like minded people. I'm afraid the internet has replaced community in many ways for sports like ours. I can see a thousand stud ads with videos, text a stranger about a line of dogs, shop for lights and read reviews instantly. I could hold a club meeting over a messenger service anytime without being near other people.

I think it is a poor excuse for community; however, people will often choose poor quality when it is easy and requires no sacrifice.

Churches have been dealing with this- big flashy events do not attract people anymore. They are trying to find smaller, more authentic ways to attract people.

Kennel clubs probably need to be thinking 20 years into the future- what can events offer that the internet community can't.

My last post on this because no matter what anyone says it will not change the minds of the ones behind the table.
This is an Association, with 1000s of paying members, this is a once a year event that we all look forward to that had 15,000 people a day (Friday an Saturday), when they moved from NC to SC it dropped in half and has went down hill every year, you are rite I can do all my shopping on line now instead of going somewhere I don’t like, but the only thing that changed was Somewhere I Don’t Like!

Hunt

Well union isn't making much if they are paying 10,000 to setwa also they said they clean up after the hunt is over coonhunting itself will no longer draw enough hunters and money using beaglers, squirrel hunters, etc combined does help maybe the setwa should have another hunt in n.c or Virginia at a different time I didn't know restaurants and etc. we're that big of a deal at a coonhunt
