Folks, this was one of the best posts on this subject matter. There is no need to fix what's not broken. There are way to many variables to ever think that we can come up with an exact dosage for every dog. Dogs like humans can be thyroid deficient, but treatment is not an exact science one plan for all. Jumping on the excuse bandwagon for poor performance and wanting an instant fix for a complicated matter is NOT going to happen. It in fact may not even be needed to start with and treatment make just make the problem bugger by messing with normal thyroid production. And another thing while I'm on my rant... those of you who constantly have prongs tightly against your dogs neck whether it be from a no bark collar worn when in the kennel 24-7 or a shocking capable collar that is worn and used frequently expect problems. The thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland on the front of the throat. I honestly believe that aside from those constantly testing looking for an excuse when in all other aspects of the dog seem healthy, the prevalence of tick disease (sick dogs will quite often test low) the many that actually show physical signs and are tested at showing levels of next to nothing with no other underlying issues are caused by over shocking and the destruction of the thyroid gland itself. Just my 2 cents worth probably not even worth that.

Like Bruce talked about bad kennel manners. You got a pup that’s 4 months old and the only way you can make it shut up is put a bark collar on it except when it’s being hunted for the rest of its life all that shocking ruins the thyroid gland the dog was already crazy now you got a crazy thyroid dog you got to poke pills down it’s throat lol


I would just get me a laid back pup but that’s just me.

I'm no vet for sure but I have never had a thyroid dog either. My current dog has probably treed 100 coons from when he was 9 months old until this fall and he will be 3 in March. This fall he couldn't buy a coon see him tree all types up until this year very accurate up until this year took him to the vet he was in perfect health my vet said only possibility was his thyroid level was 1.1 vet said that was normal so he will probably get culled and on to the next one I just thought it was odd that he would just all at once forget how to tree a coon my dad has had the blood line for 40 years and they will all miss one from time to time but not every tree they make for a couple months

My dog

Took him to a different vet today he checked his thyroid level agian the first vet said it was good at 1.1 it was 1.6 today and he put him on .6 mg thyroid pills twice a day said a working dog should be between 2.5 and 4 he is a hunter himself and said a working dog couldn't operate below 2.5

Normal Thyroid is 0.8 to 3.5. So yes, 1.1 is normal though it’s on the low end of normal. Like to see it around 2 or better. If it was my hound I would put it in 0.7 thyroid pill once a day. Given an hour before feeding time so it will absorb into his system and the thyroid get all the good from it before you feed him. Will make a huge difference in how they perform when you get that thyroid level up to where it really needs to be. Good Luck

I have to take him back in 30 days to have his levels checked agian he has done some blood work they are testing to see what is causing it and will adjust meds if need be I just hope it straightens him out
