I don't aspire for mediocrity, but with over 50 years of owning dogs and only having 3 dogs that I consider to be outstanding coon dogs, I have come to realize that good enough is more than enough for anyone. Some say they have owned a bunch of outstanding or great dogs, I say they they are either the luckiest person around or their standards are not as high as mine. I have always tried to own and hunt the best dogs I could find, not always successful. I have tried what others considered to be outstanding coon dogs that I considered very average at best. One outstanding dog will show anyone what a truly great dog can do, it will spoil you in the process. I am getting old enough that I really don't need an outstanding dog, all I would do is let it waste. I just want a dog good enough to make me enjoy coonhunting , it does not have to be great, just good enough most of the time. I think Cory Highfill said it best in his post, good enough to get the job done, anything else is just icing on the cake. Finding a good dog is not as hard as finding one that is great and not everyone will ever see, much less own a great dog. Dave

There are so many things to consider in a dog, what suits one man may not suit another man. Heck, even what suits one man changes over time and that's okay. I used to want my dogs to get treed somewhere every drop. Now, I prefer they hunt and tree close or not at all. I have no desire to hunt the very type of dog that used to suit me, age changes things. I still love tree dogs, just want closer hunting dogs these days. Hunt what you like not what someone else likes. Dave

A few months ago I was 100% satisfied. I had one that knocked a hole in the dark every single time you cut him loose and had one thing on his mind. A dog that at times was sort of a freak of nature but now I’m back to the drawing board and I’m sure it will be a while before I’m satisfied again.

In a good breeding program with the very best dogs getting bred when needed we can have a yard full of excellent hunting dogs...some could...or would call some of these dogs once in a lifetime dogs...and they are good to the point that they do an excellent job day in and day out...but they are only excellent hunting dogs...

I had these type of dogs and I also had a once in a lifetime dog...and I consider myself very lucky to have had that one and even better that he was born in my back yard...

I had heard about once in a lifetime dogs and horses every once in a while and so I read up all I could find on the subject because I was trying to figure out the difference between once in a lifetime dogs and great dogs...it was hard to describe the difference because great dogs aren’t slouches either...and it took me many years to finally find the answer which it just popped in my head one day...the difference between great dogs and once in a lifetime dogs is brain power...for me that is it...nothing can ever change my mind on that...
Just like there are many great race horses...but there is only one Secretariat...

You are a dog man with tons of knowledge, I enjoy your posts. I can tell pretty quick if someone knows what they are talking about and you are the real deal. I have only seen 3 dogs that I called exceptional coon dogs and everyone of them was extremely smart, uncanny smart. I laugh when someone says they have had multiply exceptional coon dogs, their measuring stick must be different than mine. I have seen several really good dogs, but exceptional is rare in my book. The best coondog I have ever seen was smarter than some people I have seen, he was exceptional in every way. Dave
