I am old school I guess. I had been out of hunting for several years and got back in to it a couple of years ago. Back when I use to hunt UKC is about all we had except a few NKC hunts. The things I miss at today's clubs is use to every club had food you could buy. The Wives or girlfriends would all pitch in and help in the kitchen. All clubs gave plaques or trophies. It was more like a family gathering lol. Now a days not many clubs cook or give trophies. They sign you up and send you out and go back and get your slip if you won. Trophies for me I could do without but to see a kid or a first time hunter get one the smile on there face says it all. I know times has changed and clubs can not afford to do things like they use to. But i truly believe if your a club member when you guide a cast you should do all you can to make that person want to come back to your club. Be the best host you can be. I do love the UKC hunts but I have a young dog like one win making him a Grand Nt Champion. so the question to me is what do I do at the local clubs for the next 5 to 7 years with this dog? I go to compete plain and simple. I dont need a kitchen and games and entertainment. I grab a bite to eat on the way along with gas and get there in time to enter. Most socializing happens during the 2 hours in the woods or on the way. I have people to pleasure hunt and socialize with im there for the main event and assume everyone else mostly is too. If there was an ugly dog contest held alongside the bench show i would enter that too and use the same dog. I think the bigger nicer clubs will slowly fold simply because of decreasing numbers and rising cost. I hunt a $kc club that met at the city park. Kept a file box full of hunt forms and such and had absolutely zero overhead. They usually hunt more dogs than any club around. It all worked off the back of the tailgate. They hunt quality dogs that you will see in state races pro hunts and chasing fame and always a quality guide.

The few hunts I go to each year are mainly to help the club survive , I like the folks that run them so I go when I can drive but for the past year I can hardley drive without the cops stopping me for driving too slow im tired of having to do sobriety test when I have never had a drink in my life and getting my truck searched for no reason. But for the past 2 months my driving has gotten better and I hope it continues that way.

I have always hunted for the enjoyment of hearing a good hound tree a coon. Competition was more important to me 20 to 40 years ago. If someone told me I couldn't ever hunt competition again, it would just allow more nights to pleasure hunt. However, if I go to a hunt, I'm there to win it. Increasing participation at hunts isn't going to happen unless hunter numbers in general increases. I dont see that happening. Actual coon hunters in the county I live in is less than 10. Half of them probaly less than 20 nights per year. Only one over a 100 nights per year. No serious competition hunter in the county.

I go to bs with everyone and compete. I care about the titles, to me that's my payment for the hard work I do during the week whether it be a yellow slip or some cash. If I didn't comp hunt I probably wouldn't hunt as hard as I do during the week. My club does a handler of the year deal. You get so many points for showing up, winning your cast and high scoring dog. At the end of the year they either give you cash or a gift card to a hunting supply of your choosing.

increasing numbers? hum that's something that has been on the table for as long as ive been doing this stuff. I look at it like this its all about the club and the people that run that club. if you go to a hunt and have a sour taste in your mouth about the place or the people your probably not going back. happens around here all the time my club that I am proud to call myself a member always has a decent turn out regardless of the registry. with that being said im there for the comp. aspect of it and I love to win and I like to get something for doing so. ill be honest im not going to put all the money and time and no sleep in for nothing. I don't just mean the money or trophies either I go for all of it the trophies, money, win slip, and the bragging rights I work my tail off with my hounds and I like to know that its worth something for myself mainly because I love this stuff I feel like if you cut me open coonhounds would come bleeding out of me. I really think a lot of us are just like me im hopelessly addicted and there is no cure for it and as long as im addicted you can bet im going to be preparing a hound for the next big thing with dreams of winning on the top stages of this world we call competing with hounds and Richard that's exactly why I do it im addicted

As with any business, in any trade, anywhere, UKC should:
1. Look at what has worked/failed in the past.
2. Make changes/upgrades to entice new consumers.
3. Observe your competition and what's working there.
You adapt or die in the business world..

When I am setting there all night long taking money out of my pocket to try to make things work !! If things don't change I got my hunt packets paid up this year but next year your right it won't be none of my business. I don't have a guilty conscience anymore felt good to go to that hunt the other day and visit , enter , hunt and go home.

I think some of you guys are missing the boat here thinking it's all ukc fault for not offering more incentives to the hunters reason the numbers down .

I truly don't think its ukc fault of having anything to do with the numbers . People are different now days and hard dedicated people have gotten old and the younger generation are not dedicated as much . Saying that could be due to older folks back in the day knew every neighbour where they hunted now people moving in don't want a dog / hunting etc . Used to be a dog could go miles without any problems now house lights everywhere. Timber cutting , deer hunters is some more problems .

Hey if I owned it I might feel the same way except for a few that travel by when I call on the phone they work a 40 hour work week still have time for hobbies. Are 1000 miles from most hunters everybody registers their dogs with them most that run their hunts have never seen them or talked to them and do it for free and they turn a huge profit they got good business sense at the very least to pull that off lol.

I hunt to compete to win, if i dont have. Winner i dont go. You will never see the local hunts like they used to be, because their are too many options to pick from, most people have a limited amount of disposable income so they are going to pick what best suits their interest. Most of your die hard competitors want to compete against the best dogs and best handlers they can find. In my opinion most people compete for the recognition, of course if you win the world or a big hunt, or a big money hunt the prizes are nice but the recognition is king. Convince ukc to have a section in the bloodlines where the small clubs could send in pictures of there local winners, start a fb page and put pictures of your local winners, dont you thinkbthe guy who doesnt get to travel to the big hunts wants to be recognized? If you were a young man just starting out dont you think a pic in bloodlines would get you excited. Get them to add a page to their web site where pictures and hunt results can be posted.

To me, it seems that simple....

that would draw back some hunters that quit! And , bring in some NEW ones! Looking for that cash in the fall winter!!


Please take a moment to consider what i am saying.

For the most part, what do you have now?
Folks that still hunt, that was doing it back when hides could pay for , well , A LOT if yo think about it!?

Still do it as they can still afford to do so.
Then the ones that did not do it then , caught the bug, and can afford to do it now with nothing in return, other than the pleasure , and competition aspect.

Then you have the young, and old alike i guess? That can do it as a living for the most part.....

They hunt the big money dogs , for the big money owners!

So, seems that for it to ever be like it was, if that is even possible? Is to make the hides worth something, to bring back the average boy, girl , man , women...... to be able to make the hunts.........

I bet that UKC is reading/watching this thread if only to see what Tarbaby is posting. Some things they can do but it looks like most are up to the club's. Also they have been "burnt" before by taking internet coonhunters up on their suggestions for change only to find they wouldn't support them when implemented.

They could care less what I say I ain't got enough $$$$$ for them to listen to me.
