Oh my goodness, I hate to admit it but in 1973 I had a '57 Chevy. I spent almost that whole summer at Daytona Beach, Fl and I had a whole bunch of girlfriends. They only stayed for a week and then went home. What memories...at least what I can remember. That summer is a little foggy.

I really guess I don't get this logic that I have come to understand that many guys have. Let's take for instance that your worried about hunt times of two hours if getting more bang for your buck is hunting two hours for $20 entry fee then have it your way. Now let's say there are only three dogs that show up hunting in let's say nitech and that's what your hunting. Your dog does a great job trees a boatload of coons and you get a win. At the end of the night you get your little yellow piece of paper and you go home. Now if you drove your halfton truck an hour to this hunt then drove around for around an hourish hunting you probably spent at least 50 bucks in gas so there is 70 dollars down the drain that you won't receive but maybe 15 or so dollars back in performance money months later. Now on the flip side of it there is a double header money hunt the same distance away you enter both rounds and spend $60 and the same amount of gas. You end up winning both rounds you are going to be money ahead that same night. And hunt with more guys the same night. Now I'm not knocking ukc I still hunt in them just not local hunts because to me they are not worth my time and hard earned money anymore because of the amount of dogs that show up. Simple fact is times are changing and so does they way registries run there hunts or it will slowly dwindle away.

I guess times are changing the other night we ate pizza and visited till draw out went hunting my son hunted and me and another old friend had a good visit we didn't do any good but we had fun for $20 you can't even go to the movies for that I guess it's how you look at it. I am from the generation where a good visit is priceless.

in 1979 there were 484 dogs entered in the ACHA world hunt.thats the year HARDTIME SPECK won it.

Posted by Richard Lambert on 03-16-2018 03:37 PM:

Oh my goodness Matt, what are you driving? I can drive 400 miles on $50 worth of gas. And when I win I get around $80 to $100 in Performance Money. It costs me about $10 in gas and $20 entry fee to hunt in a UKC hunt. I not only win a yellow slip and points toward a degree but around $50 to $100 so not only do I have a good time but I come out ahead.

Posted by newport on 03-16-2018 03:43 PM:

I get where your coming from on the time for $20 there really isn't much out there you can go do for 20 bucks but me being someone from a younger generation and seeing people even younger than me if there is nothing to gain from it younger people come from a time where there has to be some kind of return. I do still love to go to a local hunt and just have a good time and talk or whatever but like ive said and so many other people have times are changing and so are the people anyone that watches the news can see that and to me this subject is no different. simple fact is if we don't change we will n o longer be around.

oh Richard lol I happen to drive a truck that gets great gas mileage but most don't. I just know that our hunts around here don't draw enough dogs to get that 50 to 100 dollar payout. I have maybe come out ahead twice at a local hunt around here and we live in coon hunting heaven. now as far as the other registry goes ive entered in a lot of there hunts this year and including gas im about even for the year and ive had a hell of a good time doing it with great guys and good hunts and hounds alike. on top of that im not bringing anything down about degrees or titles but what does it mean to make a dog a nitch anymore its not like it was back in the old days if you title that dog out at local hunts in three cast on average you probably only hunted against what ten dogs. at least that is the way it is around here and im sure its like that across most of the country. yellow paper and titles just don't mean that much to me anymore and im sure im not the only one. from what I understood at the winter classic ukc is however working on some of these things tho so we will see what happens.

I hope Richard doesn't mind if I borrow this. Oh my goodness. all this talk about money. If I was that worried about money I dam sure wouldn't own a coon hound. I also have a bass boat. Never made much profit with it either. These are hobbies, not careers.

Posted by nitehunter2004 on 03-16-2018 05:36 PM:

Why not get a little return on your hobby, my last check was $1600,0, some people call it crumps, I bought land and built my house on crumbs then I bought more land by saving my crumbs, crumbs come from working hard and playing hard.

Never seen a *kc hunter burn his ukc papers and never seen a ukc hunter pass up a 20$ bill.

If there's a way to run a coon club without money I haven't heard of it. If there's a way for a club to succeed without good attendance, I haven't heard of that either. If there's a way to draw larger crowds without some sort of payout, prize, program, prestige, etc. all of which cost MONEY someone please post it there's dozens of struggling clubs that want to know...

"Prestige" doesn't have to cost money. Actually a lot of people/hunters will pay the club for "prestige". Maybe clubs could figure out an imaginative way to bestow some "prestige" on hunters. Such as a years end club championship for one. Surely top minds could come up with some more.

Posted by Richard Lambert on 03-17-2018 01:47 AM:

Here is another way to look at it.
Clubs need money.
Where does the money come from?
Hunters have to pay.
How can the club get the hunters to pay?
The club has to give the hunters something they want.

Now what do the hunters want?

A lot of people are saying that the young hunters just want money. But they have to pay money to win money. In PKC four hunters pay in but only one hunter wins. And the club takes a percentage off the top This sounds like a casino to me. Maybe the clubs should just start having card games or maybe a roulette wheel. Now that would attract the younger crowd.

Posted by MR.RATMAN on 03-17-2018 03:03 AM:

It sure sounds better than that yellow win slip that has the same gamble.
I'm 47 Richard and I'm No different than the youth I want more than a yellow win slip

UKC hunts have been going on for 50+ years. Hunters have only started wanting/talking about winning money for the past 5 years. What has changed?

Posted by MR.RATMAN on 03-17-2018 03:36 AM:

Local hunt numbers dropping and clubs closing because people that are use to the golden years won't try a change..

Agreed. Golden years are gone. Most the ol timers, baby boomers and early participants in the hunts are gone, almost gone, quit or are slowing way down. They were they backbone of the sport, but this generation looks at things differently. Toys R us didn't change the way they did business either..

Toys R Us customers went to another store. They didn't quit buying toys. Where are the younger coonhunters going to? The local PKC numbers are down as much as the UKC numbers. I wonder why those guys aren't complaining?

Posted by yadkintar on 03-17-2018 02:35 PM:

Richard I had two of my friends come hunting from about 60 miles away I showed them each their own good spot so they can guide at our ukc hunts that's the only thing that has stopped us from growing is having enough guides plus it's public hunting and big enough they can put the whole two hours in one spot. Ukc makes a few changes and I get some more guides we will be ok
