i have never had a coon hound that i would call exceptional . i have had some nice hounds . every nice hound i have owned has had at least one fault that kept them from being exceptional in my eyes .

Here is a a description of what I consider a coon dog. A dog you can load in your truck and drive up any interstate in the county or any road in the country. You can find some woods along the side of the road and you can stop and point your dog towards those woods. It will do everything possible to tree a coon in those woods. He won't run the roads, won't look for a house to eat garbage from. Go hunting and tree a coon no matter what you stop the truck.

Real Coon Dog

My definition is Consistency....1. The more consistent the better the dog.....Most broke dogs can tree easy coons. We all know that they are not all easy coons and that's when a special dog will shine. On nights when scent is bad or coons not moving much. That special dog can still get under a coon. Then there is the hound that gets under a coon when 2 or three other dogs in the same piece of woods are messing up boogering up, running off game, or coming back to the truck or cast. That real hound can still get under a coon under pressure. That's the difference boys. Breed to that hound.......! If he won't stand alone under pressure we shouldn't be breeding him or her.....I have owned one in my life and she is in my pen today. Quit competition hunting in 90's but this is by far the best hound I have ever owned....bought her when she was 18 months old from Dexter and Mandy Smith Beaulaville NC and she was as good then as she is today. just turned 5....

What is a a coondog?

A rare animal.

A real coondog has that "it factor" that rises from the rest of the dogs....

A real coondog doesn't have to be a titled dog, but they will have a brain and be able to handle the pressure of other dogs messing up and acting dumb,and they keep their mind on the task of treeing raccoon as fast and accurately as they can, when they stop and tree,their trees will have raccoons in them.Then they must stay there until you get there,no matter what,and have no bad tree habits.
They must be able to repeat this task over and over,time and time again,and never hardly mess up,like a machine,to earn this title,COONDOG.
Sounds pretty simple,but it is a hard thing to do!

Timely post

I agree with virtually all the definitions posted so far. I found this post just by chance but it’s kind of timely for me. I’ve owned many dogs of all breeds and hunted off and on for many years. A few years ago the best coondog I ever had passed away. Since then I’ve wasted more dough than I care to admit and gone through many hounds trying to find something like her. I’m not asking for much: I just want a coondog that will tree coon consistently with average or better tracking ability and speed and without any major faults like running off-game, being mean at the tree, jacking the tree, or being a “me-too” dog. I’ve about decided that my standards must be too high. Why in the world is it so hard to find a “coondog” even by this very basic definition these days? Maybe I just need to quit buying dogs that are for sell. LOL I know if I had one worth keeping it wouldn’t be for sale.

I've gone all over going to the big hunts and hunting with some big name dogs .And 95% of them are not real coonhounds when you walk to 15 or more trees in three nights and only see one set of eyes. I would rather come home and hunt with these pot lickers that when they open and tree I see eyes. I see more consistent dogs in pleasure dogs then I do at competion type dogs.

Best hound I ever owned I bought as a 7 year old and I know that you said young but I gave 400 for her from an old man that couldn't keep up with her any condition any track wasn't a 125 bark a min but about 45 to 50 stay treed till the sun came up. Ran one of game one time it was a bobcat other than that when you dropped her she didn't leave at a dead run left you at a steady jog but when you found her whether one hundred yards or 10 miles she would have a coon or legit den no squriel holes true den. You could road hunt her 6 nights and drop on the 7 and she would go till she got treed not pass up coon but go till treed loved that dog it take big money 5o find one like her now this was in 99 so no telling what she worth now but would love to have her back one of those truly when treed load the gun dogs. I know sounds far fetched today but we used to have those kind and didn't settle for less

Ya they are still around we hunt one now that is that way but he is 8 now and was in a bad wreck at winter classic but he is getting around OK. The dog I told about was heavy spring creek bread rock was her grand dad she want flashy or fancy but man could move any track and have eyes looking down. I would love to have her back like said before would problem sell every hound I have to have one like her. What I've got now is a super fast hard tree dog that will miss even now and then and that part I hate she can't handle a whipping but she learning quick when she misses what that collar is for that she wears. But I like her she is good natured great desire to please no reverse and is a family dog to but still miss the old dog

So do you think you'll find another dog that operates like the one you had for that $700?

My thoughts on this is that you most likely won't unless you find another old man. And that the dog is too much dog for again and the owner doesn't really know what he's got. Or the owner is selling for medical reasons. Those types of dogs are hard to find anymore.

My dad, who was a horse man once told me that a good horse was one that the owner was happy with. I never forgot that. I have seen horse owners that had what I call a sorry horse, but the owner loved them. I believe the same thing applies to a coon hound. I've seen some sorry coon hounds, but the owners loved them. What I am trying to say is not every one wants the same thing so I BELIEVE MY DAD WAS RIGHT THEY ONLY HAVE TO PLEASE THEIR OWNER.

Yes I think it would be hard and conditions like you said but I don't think I could for that price but it was 400 lol.
