-- Hide dog vs. competition dog (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928494225)

No difference to me at all. Hide hunt during the week and go to town on weekends. If he shows me hides during the week , he should show me hides on weekend. Maybe I'm just to poor to own both types or to dumb to know the difference.

There's a difference between them. And it has to do with some holes. A pleasure dog isn't up against other dogs and the clock. I've got both. My pleasure dog is pretty nice, but she's lost a little bit of go now in her older age. She's loose on the tree, always has been unless she seen the coon climb. She doesn't slick tree much which also means she doesn't take any chances. I've seen her take old feeder tracks over a mile on several occasions. She's not a very good layup dog. If there's company in the woods she might pack but more than likely going to go her own way.
The male dog I have is a fly in and bushwhack style of dog. He doesn't mess with old feeder tracks much. The furthest I've seen him take a track once struck is 450 yards. He's accurate up here, even though you wouldn't think so going by the score cards from last week. He likes to be by himself but will back a dog with a coon.

Now I've hunted both dogs together a couple of times. And I can tell you which one trees more coon here. Both have a place, and one will never leave my place. The other one would take some serious cash to get me to part with.

A good competition dog leaves fast and furious, strikes quickly (coon track or not), hunts hard and wide, and is looking to get treed! A good competition dog will be through the country by itself and have a coon! A good competition dog usually has a good locate and is a STAY PUT-PRESSURE TREE DOG. They usually have that extra gear, are independent, and are some what flashy. A good competition dog gets gone, gets open, and gets treed!

A good hide dog strikes when and only when they hit a coon track, it may hunt fast and hard, or they may hunt a little slower. A good hide dog takes their tracks as they come, hot, cold, or laid up. They don't necessarily blow through the country, they hunt the woods you turn them into, but will get deep if they need to. A good hide dog may not necessarily be a quick locater, they want to be accurate, so they may LOCATE, and check, then go back LOCATE the same tree to be sure they have the MEAT. A good hide dog, may not be fast, flashy, or have the best locate or mouth, but they are a pleasure to hunt, and have the coon a high percentage of the time.
