Fella where are you from? Prudent? Forest? Deep wild wilderness? Sir... Do you have your man card? It is... Sir... Right?

I know where the Croatankid hunts. He hunts in the Croatan National Forest, look it up on Goggle Earth. His dogs crossed the rock road miles from a paved road into what is called the Sheep Ridge Wilderness. This is ten or more square miles of poccosin. I dare any of you to come down here and make it even two hundred yards in the daytime, much less at night. You don't walk or even crawl through this stuff, you literally climb through it until you can find a bear path to crawl down. If you can see ten feet you are in a clear spot. It is full of two or three species of rattle snake as well as water moccasins and copper heads. The bear hunters don't even go in to most of it. Dogs often get lost in there and never make it out. I had one lost in there for eleven days before he made it out. I tried to get to him from the GOOD side and never even got close.

I looked at it on google satellite. I'd find a better place to turn loose.

So what your saying is it would be a great place for the world hunt?

Posted by JiM on 10-03-2017 03:52 PM:

We're talking about pleasure hunting here, right? Anyone who would turn loose in a place where they assume they won't be able to get to their dog (s) isn't using very good judgement. And spare me the " I don't have any place else to hunt" excuse. Turning where you know up front you prolly can't get to your dog is not thinking very much of your dog.

I can't decide if this thread is hilarious or sad.

Garmin Shows Me Things.

To someone who has an inside ear at Garmin. Have them add warning area's to the map cards. Maybe even an alarm warning that sounds. Wooop Wooop, Warning DO NOT turn loose here, this area not safe for man or beast.

There are some great areas to hunt in the Croatan but some places , just NO! Like the Croatankid said , his dogs crossed the road into a hellish mess.

In the olden days, before Garmins, we left our dogs all of the time. We had no idea where they were. We would go back the next morning or after work and they would be laying down all curled up where we turned them out. Dogs don't learn to do that in these modern times. With the advent of Garmins, dogs have become spoiled. They think that they can run anything and go anywhere and their owner will come and get them.
My how times have changed. When was the last time anyone laid their jacket on the ground and went home without their dog?

I think I'm in the twilight zone. Maybe PETA will be more accepting of my style of hunting. I am completely bewildered and disillusioned with this site and the other members. I've had it with it. I will not call myself a coon hunter because I won't be associated with this community. If people ask me, I'll tell them that I'm a night hunter. I will never associate with other hunters or shooters. I'm finished. This is my last post and my last time here.

20 years ago. Maybe 19. It was my first hound. I had no tracker. She'd usually get deep and get treed, right or wrong. This one night though, nothing. She had no reverse. I'd heard about the jacket thing, and it works! I was about 20. That was the one time I didn't bring home my dog. I be always gone and got them no matter what. If I can find em, I'm going. My dogs are real special to me. I didn't get brought up coon hunting. Coon huntin found me though, and im lucky for it. I was back roading and came up on a fella standing outside his truck. I stopped and asked if he needed help. He laughed and said no, just listening to my hounds. I asked what they were doing. He said, they are treed on a coon. Want to come with me to check it out? That guy didnt know it then, but he gave me something thats burned like fire in me and got me through many a hard stretch of life. I have been stomping the hills flat chasing walker dogs ever since. The worse life gets me down, the harder I hunt. Some folks need medicine to cope with stress, heartache, whatever is bothering them... As for myself, what makes me feel good is them dogs. I admire a coondog to much to leave one. They do me to much good inside to quit em like that. Now that's just me, and yall can laugh if you want, but some of you know what I'm talking about. A coondog is royalty among dogs as far as I'm concerned! I won't leave one behind. I understand they are just dogs to some folks. Not me though.

Well I will just say this: I'm 68 and I don't leave my dogs out, but with the Alpha I have them trained to come in when toned. There have been a couple of times when I could not get to them, across a river etc., but I tone them and they will come. Also have had them get where I knew the people didn't want us to be so I tone them and they come in. Just takes a little time in the yard to teach them. Garmin has certainly made hunting easier. Just my 2 cents worth.

Croatinkid

Sorry for you taking offense at my comments, that was certainly not my intent. I just do not understand why you would turn your dogs loose in such a place, knowing that you could not get to them if they treed. I believe the dogs wiuld be better off at home than hunting in such a mess. Exercise is important for the dogs, but at what risk? Please do not be offended by any comment made on this board, as we all have opinions ( right or wrong ). Dave

I guess I just don't understand leaving a dog like that. Never been a fan of it when you know exactly where they are.

ive hunted some pretty rough stuff- tye tye swamps that sound a lot like what you speak of... usually alone, hacking all nite or crawling to my dogs treed... its certainly not fun and ive quit coon hunting a million times on the way to that tree, asking myself what was loose in my head to want to do such a stupid thing and swearing i would never do it again...

but all was right in the world again when i got to the tree and patted my dogs up for doing their job and staying treed till i could get there.

If it is not your dog then why do y'all care what he does with it or how he hunts it? Y'all sound like a bunch of democrats, trying to tell someone else how to hunt their dogs.

exactly, dog's today only know to go one way, no homing instinct.
we always do our best to get to the dogs and 99% we do. but there is a places that is impossible to get to them down here unless you can drop in from a helicopter .
as far as the Kid not being able to get to his dogs im sure he would be glad to have a hunting partner to help him, it's his choice if he feels t is not safe to try and get to them, I agree it is the right thing to do your best to go to the tree, but in the end they are his dogs not our's
