blueticker, I think you are right. It must be a thowback to some of the old running dogs breeds that helped make up the breed. I was surprised how many guys wanted the pups with the blue eyes, there is no doubt that the blue eyed pups would bring a premium if I would have sold them. My wife wanted the blue eyed female and I made the cross for a male and there is only one male. As luck would have it, the male is the only other blue eyed pup in the litter so I am planning to breed him to at least two of my females in the future.
Since I am linebreeding these dogs, it will be interesting to see how many blue eyed ones show up in future litters. I can assure you that I don't care if I ever get another one as breeding for a strange characteristic like this can wreck a program.

Cowlick

The cowlick comes from old Smokey River Maybell, and Maybell II that Warren Had. Look that up in that dogs pedigree its there, if not you have the wrong papers. That is a real plus if you have one. you should cross that with something you will learn in time.

The Chalk Eyes

Jim Bartley said it well.

You have to remember you cant see those eyes in the dark.
It adds character in the daylight. Dave Dean wore Sun Glasses.

Chalk Eyes, Knot Tails and Cow Licks

Back when I bred the Hammer dogs pretty strong I would have a Chalk Eyed pup fairly regular and would have 1 or 2 in a litter of pups with a Knot tail. I would also get a black and white pup with no ticking from time to time. After Ole Tramp arrived here I never got anymore of the above characteristics. If I bred Tramp to a real strong Chief female I would get what I called a tan pup. I think this came from the Chief side as I bred Tramps side pretty strong and never got a tan pup. My Doll IV female had the Cow Lick and I have watched for that mark ever since, but it has not showed up again.
