X2 if the owners word is good money does strange things to people some owners the game plan can change in a moment that's why I don't hunt dogs for people anymore not worth it half the time you find out they never hunted the dog their self they bought it to make money and they filled you full of dookie.

x2, don't always work that way, tho. Sometimes Handler gets dog and wins right out of gate,to the point it surprizes even the owner, next half of or all dog is sold to big timer without handler knowledge, then the freaking starts. Lol. Could go on with rest ,but won't.

If you really want a dog hunted hard and hunted right it isn't cheap. I can't hunt my own right for $500 a month. If you want one ran hard it cost more. If you're just hunting local ukc hunts it cost expenses that's fuel, food, entry a set price win or loose $50-$75 and $100-150 a win. Pkc hunt local the same paid win or loose keep all winnings under $500. Over $500 split.

NOT IN IT FOR THE MONEY???

Then why are pups priced $250.00 to $500.00 plus or
Stud fees $250.00 to $500.00

Doing it for the fun/enjoyment???
Then why so many "tight" mouth dogs, never found enjoyment in listening to frogs waiting for a tree.
Then why so many independent dogs, just a real blast walking a mile to one dog on a tree because he wouldn't tree with others.

My opinion---pretty sure it was MONEY that has screw up this sport like many of the other sports of today.

Have you seen the ad on TV where they say want they are really feeling??
This sport would sound like---I want to beat you. I don't really care what it takes or if I have the best dog. I didn't drive all this way, leaving the family home on the weekend and spend all this money to have fun, trophies and titles, thats why I'm here.

NOW IF---you are breeding good cold nose, bawl mouth open trailing hounds that will back a hound at the tree that has a coon. And you give a young hunter a break on a pup or bred their female free and go over and pick them up for a FUN night in the woods and get back in the truck laughing, THEN you're feeding hounds for the right reason.

I'm just so glad I got my start in 1956 and got to hunt with "old school" houndmen that taught me what's really important in this sport of hound hunting and the true measurement of having FUN.

After that I will hunt your dog for free.

Ps: I meant that as a compliment

I am one of those guys that tried to be more than fair to guys I hired to hunt my dogs. I did not get even an entry slip, all I got for 1700.00 was excuses. So all I can say if you are an honest handler you should be paid well, and if you are like the ones I hired prosecution comes to mind.

Posted by msinc on 06-14-2017 03:56 AM:

A good handler that gets the job done is worth his weight in gold, period end of story. That said, rare is the person that will raise your kids like their own, run your business like it was theirs and hunt your dog like it really needs to be done. It's kind of a double edged sword...if you are fair and pay the handler what he deserves, seems like it ends up being a deal where he might not care as much as he should because he is making the money. Don't pay or treat him right and he wont care at all, other than to try and get what he can. Still, you get what you pay for for the most part.

A lot of truth to this.........

It went from a means to make extra money & feed your family to a sport. You can't blame competition hunters for wanting every advantage to compete. Love it or hate it the comp hunters are what have kept the sport hanging on. How many of the younger generation do you think would hunt just for a hobby?

Posted by yadkintar on 06-14-2017 03:03 PM:

I always wanted to be hunting the best money could buy for sombody during hide season so we would count on having a good Christmas and some left for things needed hides are not worth anything now so most dogs are evaluated only on their competition record.

Posted by OLD TIMER on 06-14-2017 03:05 PM:

I got ---

4 Grandkids.

Morgan started hunting with me when she was 5, today she turns 19 and still comes out to take care and "play" with the hounds. Have taken them all, and we still go each fall when they can harvest one. Lots of memories have been made with them over the years. One was when the Professor sent one I bred back with me and he treed Morgan her first coon, when he died "we" buried him under that tree.
So now they are 11, 13, 17 and 19 and we still have as much fun as that first night I had all 4, difference is I don't have to carry them across the creeks

PS. Competition Hunts have never been a reason I have feed hounds and hunted every year going back to 1956. I've sold hides some years for $60 and some years can't give them away. I do it for the hound work and enjoyment of the Chase, coon-coyote-rabbit.

I've been in this business as a hired gun for queit some time and can tell u if done right it's a job!! $300 a month? U must hunt in your back yard. I been their and done that. I have traveled the roads to find the pup to start with for the (boss) spent 6 months with the pup at $300 a month and turned it into a winner (2015 sophomore SS champion) I will not look at a pup for less than $500 a month and that still ain't enough!! This game ain't cheap and like anything u get what u pay for. Long loney nights gotta be worth something. While most our wakeing up we our just laying down.

Coonhound pup prices have pretty much stayed the same for years. People selling pups for $250 aren't making any money. So no I don't think people are in it for the money. 99% of the people will never come out ahead on dogs. That's a fact if it was all about the money why would people spend $5-$10000 a year too win some trophys or a few thousand dollars. The best way too try and break even is too have consistent dog and hunt nothing but pro hunts. Get in semis a few times hunt off and win a couple or get in and split. That's the best way I can think of too try and at least break even.

The hired guns is why it's hard to win at a high level it's a job for them where we work a regular job and try hunt for a couple hrs a NT ive done it and it's hard on a man and his family.plus hard to even try and hunt the way I used to with my job now days but I guess I will comp hunt here and there but mostly pleasure hunt take my son on the adventures lol

I handled dogs for a man for years in the hunts every Friday night he gave me 500.00 for the weekend that paid inters & gas& food& and me. during the week we hunted 4 nights he drove his truck and paid for the gas. so out of that 500.00 I made on average 300.00 a week end for my time .

If it's money you're after, coon hunting isn't your best bet.

Posted by Richard Lambert on 06-15-2017 02:51 PM:

Oh my goodness, you work 4-6 nights a week and get paid $300 a month? If you worked 4 hrs a night for 4 nights a week just sitting at the front door of an air conditioned Wal Mart as a greeter you would make $500 and not have any expenses.
If you are Coonhunting as a job or to support yourself then you might want to do some serious recalculating.

They used to have that. The Professional Kennel Club was for those hired guns and UKC was for the weekend or amateur hunters. UKC had a policy that you could only give a handler money for gas and entry fees. But somewhere along the way this was dropped or abandoned. Maybe they should go back to that policy.

I don't think anyone on this entire thread has said anything about coonhunting as a full time job or primary source of income. Most folks that are "full time" dog handlers have a day job too. There are only a select few folks I have known that made a living %100 off dogs and hunting. Even then it's usually short term. Anyhow that's not what this post was about. No one is asking for advice on how to make a living coonhunting FYI.

I know several who hunt for a living. I think I'd burn myself out if I did, & I don't want that. If a man made $400 a month + expenses & hunted hard that'd be around $2-3 an hour I'd guess.
