I think deer hunters way of thinking has locked up a bunch of land that makes it hard for houndsmen to gain access to. Often times I get denied permission to hunt because of the deer hunting. I have found that trying to work with them on a Predator control program helps some. And even being able to hunt from season close till turkey season or even later in the year is sometimes possible. Most generally they just dont want dogs on the property and that hurts us.

Sorry to get off topic

My Thoughts

Well here is my take on the situation ; I do agree the numbers are down at some of the rqe's but my hat is off to UKC for moving it around. We all have to travel to a hunt at some point if your gonna chase the bigger pot of gold at the end of this elusive rainbow. I know different geographical areas has different challenges; for instance I live in Iowa where the coon hunting is some of the best in the world and if you take a dog out of the south that is a sure enough coon dog where coon are thin and stick him in thick coon and tight woven wire fences they can struggle. The same goes with dogs from the north, they can struggle with the hills and swamps and thin coon. It has always been my idea that a TOP coondog and one DESERVING of a world hunt title SHOULD be able to perform well in any condition or terrain. My daughter which at last check was leading the Bright Eyes Youth series has proven this with her hound across the country. Flat land of the midwest to the hills of W Virginia to the swamps of Louisiana. If a person is packing a true WORLD CLASS hound the area the hunt is in should not be a deterent but yet a proving point that indeed they do have the best of the best. Last but not least it gives everyone the chance to hunt a little closer to their neck of the woods at some point instead of all of us having to travel to the golden states of coonhunting. Good luck to all that have qualified this year. We have 3 qualified and the good lord willing we will pack our Midwest hounds to Georgia come September. When you run with the best and beat them in their terrain then you have something to be proud of. JMO

Two years ago I decide I am going to go get me one from the time I sat down till the time I was dragging one out was 23 minutes.

I have hunted in Oklahoma quite a bit. Found the hunting is way easier than ours in the winter. Little harder in the summer. Never had any trouble treeing coons that I remember

Precisely.

But I've also never known or met another group of "men" so afraid to walk uphill a time a two as I ever have coonhunters.

Josh this goverment land around lake texoma is gov land for a reason it's either flooded or grown up but it's all we got so we just make the best of it only thing helps me is I have hunted it so long I know how to get around the bad stuff.

Missing the point

People are stuck on this afraid to hunt thing. For the most part it is not that at all. I am Ohio all my life and l enjoy where l live. Hunting is great. For me it is the distance, which relates to time away from work and family and also the money to go that far and stay away like that. It could be no different if it was out west too far also. Good dogs in all areas of the US. Most of us are still just guys that enjoy a good dog. Cant all run all over the country to pursue a chance at a moment in the spotlight. Just saying...

Posted by Adam Wingler on 05-31-2017 03:26 PM:

Na, no missed point here, just differing opinions on why someone doesn't decide to run for the world this year. I can easily support anyone's decision to personally decide a better use of their own money. Distance is an issue, as it's ALWAYS an issue for most southern hunters...except for this year. 👌

How many 'southern' coondogs have won the World hunt in past 6-7 yrs.?
None, just a bunch of Northern Culls.......................

The long drive, extended time off WORK is the main problem having it in
the far South East corner of The USA.
Keep it centrally located and the numbers will be higher.

And l wish you the best of luck sir. And l agree it should move around for the very reasons l mentioned. You can either go or you cant.

One big ole possum at the right time can mess things all up and those Yankee dogs evidently crave possum I can't wait already bought the popcorn and A&W root beer lol.

Tar

Your a hoot! You gonna be able to take advantage of that southern BIG DANCE HUNT?

Posted by yadkintar on 05-31-2017 04:05 PM:

Got two problems waiting on getting approved to get this bad knee fixed and just a little short on dog power. But about a year I am going to hang up my hat at work and I plan on being at the big hunts more alls I got to do is get one of these old females to come in heat I am craving puppies bad lol. Be nice to have one to walk in the woods with after they fix this knee.

Being from Wisconsin, I had a dog in the finals in 2004 at King NC. Not even considering another trip like that again. Way to far for a coonhunt. Our club is holding an RQE in couple weeks, I don't expect very big crowd. But I do think moving the finals around is fair for everyone.

All UKC hunt numbers are down around here, many by as much as 50%. The RQE's here are down too and I'm sure most would say its because of where the Finals are but I doubt thats the real reason. The hunts are just down.

World hunt

The main street John the Baptist dog wasn't from up North for sure and he won it in the last six or so years right here in Tennessee. But if anybody that coon hunts has a dog that's the caliber of dog to win it it will be in Georgia and if you don't have the dog power to win it you will stay at home.

After stomping so many people in Iowa I would have thought I would have heard of you, but I haven't. Then you said a dog jockey has the best dog in Iowa and I realized you're drunk.
