I don't think they can. But I will say this. You can load before you go or you can stop where the signal gets weak and load them.

I downloaded the app to my phone. Looks pretty simple to use and the online maps are way better than the Birdseye maps

Maybe I'll get one in the next week or 2

DOES IT WORK IN AREAS THAT DON'T HAVE CELL SERVICE?

Yes. Without cell service you just have basic maps unless you download them for the area before you get there.
