-- Most Costly Possum you ever treed? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928471088)

Posted by Joe Moore on 01-08-2017 06:45 PM:

2004 PKC Youth World final cast, with 5 seconds left I treed my old clover male deep. If he had the coon I would have won the hunt, got into him deep and the old man had a possum. That was the only animal treed all night long, a hole and a few slick trees. For any of you familiar with hunting the PKC world hunt when it was held in Kentucky, the final cast was guided to the LBL and there wasn't a coon around. I still could't have been prouder for the amount of casts he won to get me there. Not that the opossum cost me, but a coon would have helped me by about 3 grand when it was all said and done lol

Possum, known in South Carolina as a raccoon with mange on it's tail. LOL. Glad to see that you are still around, as I have missed your sense of humor and wit. Dave

few years back was hunting in the zones. Had won my cast the night before with my Fog dog and was winning the cast on saturday night. Fog struck a cold track and worked deep, in the meantime other dogs on the cast were declared treed, so i had to tree Fog to stay ahead. Got to his tree it was a huge mulberry on a fencerow and all i could find was a baby possum. Cost me goin to the world. Ended up dogs declared treed were someones dogs who were pleasure hunting.

In 1992 I drove 7-8 hours to Autumn Oaks and drew Jerry Wynn with Spare Time Spanky and another big name English dog at the time named Levi. I was hunting Brandy and she already drew both of these dogs a couple times the year before and won, so their owners knew her real well. She was cranking and ready and Jerry was all uptight when we got to the woods. haha.

Cut them loose and on the first drop she gets in there about 400 yards and slams a tree no more than 10 min into the hunt. I got them shut out on strike and tree. Jerry is really uptight now. We walk in there and I'm smiling from ear to ear cause I know she's got the meat because she ambushed it. Jerry is shaking his head as Spanky runs past us. I'm thinking man this is going to be good. It's an apple tree at the edge of a field and there he was grinning at us. Jerry pats me on the back and says that's too bad. Never felt so humiliated. I owned her for most of her life from the time she was 4 years old, and she never treed one before that night or after. Things that make you go nuts.

If we can substitute a curled up sleeping red squirrel for the possum!!! Your welcome Todd & Ken. Take care, Ron.

Yes sir Doc ole Jerry was a tough draw. Enough could go wrong on a cast with Jerry Winn without your own dog treein possums lol. I drew him one night in 93ish after driving 20 hours to a Purina hunt and about the best coondog I've ever had a leash on curled up at my feet and went to sleep. Owned or hunted with her 10 years never known her to get sleepy in the middle of a cast. Maybe she was wore out from scoring 1400+ the night before lol. That's what Jerry told me anyway.

I have one memory of those things costing me in the hunts.
It was around 1979. I drove from Miami to Chiply Fl by myself which was about 580 miles one way just for the state UKC hunt. I was dedicated back then. lol Anyways I was winning the cast but not with a lot of points but figured I would place in the top five of the hunt, which had me tickled. Right at the end my dog backed a blue tick on a tree that had a possum in it. I never saw that dog before that or after that mess with a possum. Actually seen many treed around him and he paid them no attention. Funny note about this hunt is they gave a Trophy to the man (nut) that drove the longest distance to get there. I had that won easily. Thing is it was cold and I went to the truck to get warm and fell asleep and when I woke up I saw a guy walking out with my trophy and only drove half the distance I did. lol
Back then a man would almost kill for a trophy. lol
