Been hunting a few nights since my last post but with about the same results. Last night was typical. We hit the woods right ab dark trying to see if the coons moving real early. We sent my buddy's good walker female one direction and I cut Oak ab 180 degrees from her. As Oak was zigzagging his way up and over a ridge that walker dog struck and BAM. She treed and treed every breath. We let her tree a min waiting for Oak to circle back off the ridge or strike himself. He never hit the first track so called him in and headed towards that walker. She had her coon....one drop, one coon....pretty good for round here. Loaded up and headed for drop two. Cut them together this time but they went separate ways but eventually circled back together. Strike em both...short lil track and Oak is blowing the top out treed and the walker dog is there to. Get in there and the walker comes to us as if to say, I tried telling him that it ain't there and she was right. Couldn't find a thing. Back in the truck for drop three. Again cut em together and again separate ways. They covered a ton of ground and nothing. Let's go one more place. Cut both dogs across a lil swampy, slew looking area. About 400 yards deep that old walker gyp yelled back she smelled one but it must have been about 6 mos old. I'm talking COLD COLD track. She bawled just hear and there with Oak chiming in just occasionally. After about 45 mins of that track not heating up OAK came in and to my surprise that old walker female was close behind. First time I ever seen her give up on a track..told me it was worse than cold. Well it's late and cold so we head to the house. Maybe better luck next time. Only saw one coon but not cause the dogs didn't try. They both flat covered some acreage and both handled real good tonight. Coons are scarce and tracks they do find are cold. It will turn around at some point. OAK still doing his job to his best. Goes hunting, gets treed when appropriate most times and comes in when it's time to go home.

HUNT DATE

Hey Mr. Brockman, soon as I can head up and not worry ab the weather for a night or two I'll head up.

Posted by khester7923 on 02-14-2017 03:54 AM:

Haven't posted anything last few hunts because nothing really new to post. Lots of old bad tracks and den trees lately. Turned Oak loose tonight and he left like he was glad to be out. Made a big sweeping left handed turn thru some real nice old timber. Lots of big mature oaks and hickory trees. Plenty of food and lots of water. Just about the time I was thinking he wasn't going to hit a track ole Oak opened up with a short bawl. I'm learning this short bawl usually means a better track for him to run. Oak made a handful of short bawls over a small ridge and right down the middle of a small branch. One long locate followed by two more long locate bawls followed by a short silence while he doubled checked hisself then the choppin began. Oak was sure he was right and he was tellin the world. On my way to him I knew he was close to a big den tree he had treed on a few times already this season. I really thought he had probably found that big den again. Got there and he was treed up a big oak tree growing right in the middle of that branch, and it wasn't a den. Looked a few minutes using my amber light on my new Reaper light with no luck. So I hit the squaller a few blows and she couldn't help but give us a look. Put the big spot on her and saw it was a full grown coon. One shot rolled her to Oak and he made short work of it. With the size of the coon I really figured it to be a nice boar but it was a big ole sow coon. I wish it had been a boar. Petted Oak up real good and sent him on. Wasn't long before he was on another track. Seemed like a good one again. Up and over another small ridge across another branch and treed on the side of the next lil ridge. This tree was another great great big ole sweetgum tree with a hairy top to it. I looked the tree over til my neck got sore and still hadn't seen it all. I never saw a coon but that tree had more hiding places than I could look at. Really needed a second pair of eyes. Figured it was time to head in. Dropped the lead on Oak and told him to heal and we headed home. What was as impressive to me as the job Oak did on treeing that coon tonight was something that happened on our way home. Oak was dragging his lead just a few feet ahead of me down an old gravel road. About 30 yards ahead of us a deer blowed at us. I looked up and a nice doe was standing right in the road broadside blowing. Then she just eased her sweet self right into the edge of the woods then ran. I never picked up Oaks lead but I did remind him to heal. We both walked right past where that doe stood blowing and Oak never even acted like he smelled her. I was ready for a lesson in deer ain't allowed but never had to do it. To me that was impressive cause that scent had to be burning up his nose but he never flinched. For a young dog he sure acts like an old veteran sometimes.

Me and Oak left the house walking tonight. I was just in the woods a few yards and I cut him loose. Spent the next few mins kinda watching him on the Garmin and gettin all my stuff situated. Once I decided he was not going toward the main road I started walking. I literally hadn't taken 20 steps when I heard him running a good track. I didn't hear him strike cause it's loud walkin in the dead leaves. I stopped to listen to the race just in time to hear that long bawl locate, then another then one more and no double checkin tonight. He went right into a good hard chop with a short bawl mixed in every once in a while. All this had taken about 15 mins from turning loose and he was ab 600 yards from me. Got there and he had put a big fat sow coon up a sapling. She couldn't hide so I rolled her out to the blue dog. He sure made short work of gettin her treed. I have to work in the morning so a quickie hunt was just what the dr. ordered. I know it won't sound impressive to guys with a good coon population but for us here on the mtn with less than thin coons, three turn outs and two coons, one coon each night is pretty dang good here. The other tree last night was just so big and hairy that I just couldn't see it good but I counted it a miss. So less than an hour from walking out the door and Oak is back in bed and I'm not far behind him.

REAL WARM NIGHT HERE FOR FEB. BUT OAK AND HIS FOLLOWER HIT THE WOODS LAST NIGHT. IN OAK STYLE HE LEFT ON A DEAD RUN AND GOT ABOUT 500 YARDS PRETTY QUICK BUT IN REALITY HE PROBABLY COVERED ABOUT 1 1/2 MILES GETTING THERE WITH THE WAY HE ZIGS AND ZAGS AND CUTS BACK AND FORTH ACROSS BRANCHES AND RIDGES. JUST ABOUT THE TIME I WAS BEGINNING TO THINK NOTHING MOVING OAK OPENED UP WITH A HUGE BAWL SQUALL MOUTH, ONE I NEVER HEARD BEFORE. HE WAS FLAT LIGHTING SOMETHING UP. PROBLEM WAS I WASNT SURE WHAT IT WAS. ALTHOUGH IVE NEVER HAD HIM MESS WITH ANYTHING BUT COONS, HE WAS FLAT RUNNING THE HAIR OFF THIS THING. TWO DIFFERENT TIMES I WAS JUST ABOUT TO ADMIT HE HAD A DEER WHEN HE WOULD SLOW DOWN AND CUT BACK AND FORTH LIKE HE DOES ON A COON. BUT THEN HE WOULD BE BACK ON IT AND SCREAMING AT IT. IF YOU LOOK AT THE GARMIN IT LOOKS LIKE A 2 YR OLD GOT LOOSE WITH A PENCIL. STRAIGHT LINES, CIRCLES, ZIGS AND ZAGS, WELL YOU NAME IT AND ITS THERE. ALL THIS WAS STARTING TO ADD UP TO SOME TIME. NOT ONE TIME DID HE EVER STOP AND LOCATE A SINGLE TREE, WHICH ALSO HAD ME THINKING IT DIDNT CLIMB. BUT JUST SHORT OF AN HOUR INTO THIS HOTTER THAN THE SUN RACE, OAK LOCATES...QUIET FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN ANOTHER LONG BAWL DYING LOCATE AND THAT OAK CHOP. HE THINKS HES GOT HIM. WELL EVEN AFTER ALL THE RUNNING AND CUTTING THEY ARE ONLY A LIL OVER 400 YARDS FROM ME NOW SO I EASE ON IN. FIGURING IT WAS AN OLD RUNNING BOAR COON THAT FINALLY GOT TO HIS DEN, I WASNT IN A HURRY. GOT THERE AND OAK WAS TREED UP ON A BROKE OFF SNAG WITH THE TREE STILL BARELY ATTACHED AND LAYING OVER ON ITS SIDE. OAK WAS FIRING THAT SNAG UP. THE TREE WAS A DEN BUT WITH IT BROKE OFF I COULD SEE UP IN IT FOR QUITE A WAYS. SHINED THE LIGHT IN AND WAY UP IN THERE WAS JUST THE TIP OF MR COONS TAIL. NO WAY TO GET HIM BUT OAK HAD HIM. THAT COON RAN LIKE A DEER AND A FOX FOR ALMOST AN HOUR BUT COULDNT GIVE THE YOUNG BLUE DOG THE SLIP. LET OAK WORK UP A GOOD SLOBBER TREEING THEN PETTED HIM UP REAL GOOD AND TOLD HIM TO HEAL AND WE HEADED HOME. I DECIDED TO GO BY AN OLD WET WEATHER POND THAT I HEARD THE FROGS CROAKING IN. OAK STILL ON THE LEAD WHEN HE OPENED AND OPENED HARD. I CUT HIM LOOSE AND HE DIDNT GO 200 YARDS AND FELL TREED. EYES LOOKING AT ME SOON AS I LOOKED UP. THIS COON WAS CLOSE TO A FEEDER I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET COONS INTO SO WE LET THIS ONE STAY IN THE TREE FOR ANOTHER DAY. SO TWO TREES AND TWO COONS SEEN. LOADED OAK UP AND HAD TO DELIVER SOME STUFF TO A FRIENDS HOUSE THAT LIVES IN A NEIGHBORHOOD. GOT OAK OUT FOR THE KIDS TO SEE AND PET AND HE IMMEDIATELY STARTED OPENING. HE DIDNT WANT TO BE PETTED CAUSE HE WANTED LOOSE. IT WAS OBVIOUS HE SMELLED A COON BUT I COULDNT CUT HIM. WE WERE AB 75 YARDS FROM A BIG OLE RED OAK TREE THAT THE BLUEHOUND WAS STARING AT AND TREEING HIS HEAD OFF WITH ME HOLDING HIM BACK ON THE LEAD.

SORRY THIS POST IS SO LONG BUT IT WAS JUST ONE OF THOSE GOOD NIGHTS. WELL IM HOLDING OAK BACK AND HE WONT SHUT UP SO I REACH FOR MY NEW REAPER LIGHT AND SHINE THAT TREE RIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE WOODS AND BAM...2 SETS OF GLOWING EYES. 2 COONS UP THERE SAFE AND SOUND IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. SO AFTER ALL WAS SAID AND DONE, LOADED OAK BACK UP AND GAVE HIM HIS NIGHTLY AFTER THE HUNT HONEYBUN, WE HAD LOOKED UP 3 DIFFERENT TREES AND SAW THREE ON THE OUTSIDE AND ONE ON THE INSIDE. PRETTY DANG GOOD FOR WHERE I LIVE. BROCKMANS BLUE OAK IS REALLY CLICKING RIGHT NOW, WISH WE HAD ANOTHER MONTH OF KILL SEASON. SOON AS I CAN I WANT TO GET HIM UP NORTH OF ME SOMEWHERE AND HUNT SOME COON INFESTED PATCH WOODS AND SEE HOW HE DOES. TILL THEN WE WILL JUST KEEP CHASING THESE TENNESSEE MOUNTAIN COONS AROUND.

Well the hot streak is over or atleast is was last night. Took Oak and hit the woods again last night. Waited a little longer last night than the previous nights and I think that was the difference. Oak finally struck what he thought was an old track and he finally got it going and put the end at a monster pine tree. Of all the hardwoods where we were, why did it have to end at the biggest and hairiest pine there was for miles. Needless to say I looked and looked and squalled and beat and banged but I couldnt find a thing. Move on deeper and cut loose again.
This time Oak really had to hunt and cover some timber to strike up another old cold track. He worked it best he could and finally after locating on several trees and moving on, he finally treed up another big ole white oak. i was able to look this tree over pretty good and still found nothing. Coon could have been in the pine very easily but I believe ole Oak missed the one he thought was in the oak tree. Seems just about the time you think they walk on shallow water they have an off night. Guess thats why they call it hunting. Gonna take tonight off to rest up and hit it again hard as ever wednesday night.

Had things to do later in the evening so me and Oak hit the woods right at dark. Didn't have time for more than one drop or a long hunt. Oak did his part just like he knew we were short on time. Cut him straight from the truck with find em boy. Oak lit out like he was on a mission. Up a ridge then left handed across the top and down the ridge to a small creek/branch. Down the creek kinda zigzagging like he does and BAM, Oak struck. Didn't take him long til he located then a quiet second or two then treed. Eased on into him and he was treed up a big mature oak tree. Shined with the amber and no eyes. Switched over to the spot and there he is. High up wedged in a fork with his head about completely covered up. They can hide them eyes but it's hard to hide that tail. Petted Oak up good and let him tree a few more minutes. Time to get back to the truck so I rolled a big boar coon out to the bluedog. Let him chew on it a few seconds then told him to heal and we headed out. When a dog handles like Oak, it sure eases your mind and puts all the enjoyment back into the hunt. Back at he truck and dog loaded, it's time to go. I think Oak was showing out for one of my hunting buddies but he did the job of a 5 yr old seasoned coondog tonight. Can't ask for anything more than he did this evening.

Well the season is over here in tennessee. oak did a great job for hunting these rough old thin coon mtns i live in. I could not have asked for anything better. he aint perfect but im keeping him. I would love to see some pups out of him to see if he throws pups like himself. not many bluedogs colored like him, not many dogs of any breed handle like him and not many of any breed hunt like him. if anybody has a good female they want bred Ill breed Oak for FREE to get some pups on the ground out of him. if your female has dna on file with $kc ill superstake the litter if owner of female wants. check out his background, should be enough in there to suit about everybody with a good blue female.

Oak has one litter. 5 survived and are treeing coons.

If anyone can give me some information on dogs deeper in oaks pedigree I'd appreciate it. Does he go back to the old hammer dogs Dave dean started with? Also anyone with one of the five pups sired by BROCKMANS BLUE OAK, I'd like to hear from you. Like to know how thes pups are doing.

Oak back out tonight. Trying to get him ready for a trip up north to hunt in the Dave Dean tribute hunt in Michigan. He is so use to hunting all night to find a single track, not sure how he will act in those thick northern coon. Anyway cut him loose tonight and he had 3 weeks of penned up gotta go to get out. He was fired up and ready to go. He struck a good track and was firing it up when it turned and went where we couldn't go. Page wire fence so tight to the ground he couldn't find a way under and he was looking. Had to catch him and leave that one for another day. Cut loose again and he flat cut about 100 acres of woods to pieces looking.he went up and over two ridges, followed the ridge bone down to a slow running branch and worked it back and forth till we just finally ran out of woods. Some nights around here no matter how cooney the night looks are just nights they ain't moving. Well we loaded up and back home. Gotta work early so no time for third drop. Couldn't fault him for a single thing tonight. He hunted like he always does and he came in when I called him even though he acted like he wanted to keep huntin. Hope to see and meet a bunch at the hunt. See y'all there.

Put Oak in his first ukc hunt last night. we went up to birchwood tn and got in the plott sectional they were having. real good turn out and we got lucky enough to get on a real good cast with three plotts. could not have asked for nicer guys and all the dogs minded there manners and made for a good hunt. we had a guide that put us in some real nice big timber so everything was set, but somebody forgot to tell the coons to do there part. Oak hunted like he always does when its just him and me but I could tell he was trying to figure out why them other dogs were not with him sometimes. he got first strike on the first drop but i did not like the way he was treeing cause i knew he wasnt sure or didnt like it but i treed him for 50. three of the 4 dogs were there and treed up a big oak growing right out of the side of one more steep rock covered ridge. there were two cedar trees growing up into that big oak but we could see the top real good. we all agreed it looked slick so right off the bat we tally up 150 minus. load up and on to the next spot which was more of the same type of timber. one plott opened up soon as we cut them but i waited and made sure before I struck oak in for third strike. the three plotts all went together and oak split off and worked a decent lil track then located two or three times and treed. I let him tree a min or two to make sure those plotts didnt pull him and treed him for 125. now when your dog is in his first hunt and treed all alone with three other dogs trying to call him off to go with them, well 5 minutes is more like 5 hours. oak was treed and at times was clicking em off but several times he shut up a few seconds and thats where i think he was trying to figure out why them other dogs were still going in the other direction. but he never got put on the clock and he held and was clicking when we got to him. he was treed up one giant of a tree right on the side of a good branch. I looked best I could but even with my new reaper light it was hard to see the top and all the big branches. I felt like that coon was hid in there somewhere but i couldnt find it and no one else said they saw it so deeper in the hole we go. by now those plotts are DEEEEP, but one handler calls his treed. we head to them with time running out and after several hundred yards and two of the three plotts declared treed we start to hear them better. we get there and they are treed on a snag with more of those cedar trees growing all around it. we can see the snag pretty good but cant see much in those cedars so the plotts go deeper in there hole just like oak. so long long walk back to the trucks and some hand shaking and thanking the guide for putting us in some real good looking timber then back to the club house. even though oak didnt have the results i was hoping for he did show me he can handle the pressure put on him and he stayed true to the way he acts and handles when its just me and him. think ill keep putting him in there and hopefully get him a nt ch hat to wear pretty soon.

Update time on Oak. First we made it up to Michigan for the Dave Dean tribute hunt. Really enjoyed the trip and the hunt. Those guys up there have a great club and Kenny Herman and the rest of the members put on a good hunt. Oak didn't get things going Friday night but Saturday night we drew out on a real good cast and had an excellent judge and guide. He put us in some great hunting. It came down to Oak and a real nice walker female, both doing things right and showing some coons. Came down to the last few minutes with both dogs lots of circle points and Oak leading cast by 25 points. Kate the walker female got a first and first on the last coon and edged Oak out of his first cast win. That made Kate a double cast winner and she placed 3rd Friday and 6th Saturday night. Oak has shown me he can hold his own and he is all business during the hunt. I know there are a lot of real good dogs out there but I haven't seen him just straight out out classed. The following weekend we made it up to birchwood Tennessee for another ukc hunt and RQE. Again we drew out with some good guys and nice dogs and drew a real good guide in Travis Sneed. Travis put us in some excellent woods so all we needed was a good dog. First turn loose Oak went ab 600 yards and struck. He worked it and treed right at the edge of a big field just above a nice big pond with plenty of frogs croakin. Oak was first and first I think so all we needed was eyes. Got there and Oak was by himself so we looked over a real big oak tree and found a well used hole in tree for a bona fide den and about 225 circle. Second cut Oak pretty much same deal. First and first and another den. All we need are plus points and cast win to qualify. Well this is where the night came to an end fast. While we looking over Oaks second tree about 50 yards away a walker female came treed and was blowin the top out. After we scored Oaks tree and walked away there was still time left on her tree so had to cut Oak to her. He never opened but with less than a min left on her tree he backed her.....nervous walk in and BAM....EYES.....grinner eyes.....SCRATCH !! Never have bothered to work Oak on possum breaking cause he ain't never treed one by hisself while I owned him. Even though he didn't trail it up and tree it himself, he still messed up when he backed her. So we got the trap set trying to catch a big fat slick tail so Oak can have some electrotherapy. I don't think he will be hard to convince that smell is bad but we still gotta do it. Hopefully we can hit another RQE and get qualified. Even though Oak hasn't lit the scorecard up yet, he is still showing me he has what it takes to win eventually. He goes hunting, he gets alone if he needs to, he gets struck and he gets treed pretty quick and once he trees he holds his tree til I get there whether he is right or wrong and that's all I can ask for. So we gonna keep gettin out there and good things bound to happen.

Got home today after work and finally had that therapy possum in the trap. Well I left it in the trap and drug it a lil ways and set it by a tree. Collard Oak up and sent him to the woods. He never opened on track but went to the trap and started to open up and I lit his world up..twice.....had to actually pull him out from between my legs when he got back to me. Put oak back in pen. Went and got the possum and put it in the pen with him. He literally jumped up on his dog house and laid down looking away from the possum in his pen. Left possum in there a while and he never once looked at him. Went and took mr possum and dumped him out of trap and he ran like a scalded dog. Let him get gone and went and got oak. Let oak go where I turned the possum out. Again he didn't open but when he put his nose down where the possum had run off, well Oak got more therapy. He came in on a dead run.....walked him on to the woods and let him fool around a while to forget ab the possum. Walking back to his pen I had him heeling. When we got to where the possum had run off, ole Oak left his heel and gave that old possum track a wide berth. I was walkin in that possum track and Oak would not come walk with me. He stayed wide all the way back to his pen. Oak is super smart and I hope that did it for him. I want him to think that smell burns....time will tell.
