Just think about this how many people hang on to 4 or 5 generations to see those passed down traits from a dog 5 generations back ? All the successfull breeders I have known did and many would tell you when a pup did somthing they would say he got that from his great grand father ! I don't care what anybody says I have seen it family traits are passed down from generations after generations you can't see it buying a new dog every 6 months.

Yadkin tar, I agree i see it daily, but then again mine are close
Certain traits are passed on and you only know that if you have seen several generations. Point is old so and so back there is gone, unless he has been introduced multiple times.
Example:
The more you breed a good male the more offspring he has , the more possibilities you can linebreed him and keep adding his traits back to the line without getting to close.

Does the glass only hold a certain amount so you actually lose 50% of each parents genes with each generation?

Got to wondering about this question. So I went and read about 10 websites last night.
A sire passes on 50% of his and the Dam is 50 percent. And each pup can have a mixture of which part of father and mothers DNA. So unless line breeding certain traits can be bred out of them.

I guess that unless you are linebreeding those genes get "watered down" with each generation. It sounds like if you want a certain trait in your pups you will have to either linebreed or breed two different lines that had that same trait.

Good question, that I don't have an answer for.

When Lobo treed he stood at the base of the tree and shuffled back and forth with his front feet in time with each bark. I still see this today in some of the pups I raise. Not sure where it came from, but it's still here.

I've owned a cur and a black and tan that did the same thing. Maybe it goes back 50 generations to Tennessee Lead.

Oh my goodness, some people say that a sire adds 50% of his genes to a cross and some say that his genes are reduced by 50% each cross. Doesn't that mean that after 4 gen only 6% of the original genes remain?

Does anyone have a dog that digs a hole at the base of a tree and barks out their butt and reproduces it in their pups ? If I saw a trait this unique I would be able to say that came from old Tailwinds. How many "traits" are we talking about that are just hound similarities that you can find in all breeds ?

Let's see:Looks(Good heads and athletic), desire to find game, Mouth, intelligence, accuracy, independence, no babbling, no craziness, kennel manners, I am sure i am forgetting some
I have brought some hounds here that almost made me loose my mind, and that don't take long.lol
So all these are traits that are very important to me
