I've used buckets to get pups started, but I never turned loose on top of them. I always had mine 100 to 200 yards from where I cut loose. They are expensive and a lot of work keeping them filled.


Here's the question: What is the difference between a bucket 100 yards deep in the woods and turning loose in the edge of a sweet corn patch? Not defending buckets, just asking for thoughts.

I use the tire feeders never put them near a tree they got to strike the track and take it to the tree.

What would be the harm in putting one out to be sure you get 1 good track? You can't win unless you see a coon. I'm not sure I'd want to hunt all night on some but can see advantages to 1 turnout. I know a guy that screams he was cheated every time he goes somewhere and gets beat. he truly doesn't understand it's possible to get beat without being cheated.
Now, that being said; he did have a nice dog that almost made Gr. Nite before dying at an early age. BUT...he guided every cast the dog won. He knows some spots with coons and I think the dog knew where to go in that area. Pretty much the same situation as feeder buckets if you turn loose away from them and dog cuts back.

Y'all had better hope that they have a lot of feeder buckets put out in Elberton, Ga next Sept. If not, there is sure going to be a lot of crying.

Most of the time guys that are against feeders have never actually hunted off of feeders.

I use to have a couple of buckets out years ago, some nights you would strike right off the buckets some nights you didn't.

I can count on one hand the number of times that we treed of the bucket tree.

I will agree that the guides dog knows where the buckets are and has a slight advantage, but in thin coon I'd rather hunt off a guides buckets than no buckets at all.

The place I hunt nearly every night has a tire feeder on it. I put the feeder right in the middle of the property. I have 3 spots I turn out and they are 500 yards or farther from the feeder depending on where I turn out from. I have never treed within 100 yds of the feeder. I have taken a young dog and turned it loose right on top of the feeder only to have it tree 200 yds away from the feeder. Imop there is no difference in hunting the edge of a corn field and hunting off feeders.
