Cold nose a lot say they have but very few do it's in the eye of the beholder since 90 percent don't breed for it or want especially for competition plain and simple just not what people want in today's feeder bucket pop up world

Not going to say one is better than another. But there is a difference. Best advise I can give even to myself, Make some phone calls and ask questions. Go hunting with the studs and especially pups out of the line of dogs your considering.

Cold nose

I know a guy well who hunted a line of walkers that had exceptional noses and knew how to use it. Unfortunately the line fizzled out. Saw several of them tree coon consistently in terrible conditions and have no difficulty. Had other dogs around them that had no idea a track existed until it was treed. The dogs were sailors breed walkers. If anyone still has this breed going please call me. I measure all my dogs today to these and none are even close but I haven't given up. Most guys I know don't believe me when I tell them the conditions we used to Hunt in and tree coon after coon. They never experienced it and would rather sit on couch when moon is bright for example.

i belive u i have one like that but not that breeding hard to find that nose now days

My Homie dog is as cold nosed as ive ever owned or hunted with. Multiple times I've had him strike and tree coons that other respectable dogs just couldn't smell. And he finishes his tracks always. The only Time he quits a track is if I make him quit by toning him for being too close to a road. He's trailed and treed several bear for us also. He is Hardwood Bean x Cranberry Creek Drama.

i had a dog out of brookshier uncle lee and a nt.ch bitch chris waller had ..the best cold nosed track dog we had in this country you droped old sam on a cat track outher dogs passed by he acted like he ran the track by sight in the snow at times.great mouth, set down tree dog.still looking for anotherlike himhard to find

The coldest nosed and ability to easily move tracks in bad conditions i have personally witnessed came from Coma X Lone Pine cross and Jiggs X Lone Pine cross. Im told that it is coming from both sides in these 2 cases.

Question for you guys with the cold nose experience. In trying to get those cold nosed hounds, how many cross the line and experience part time stand on their head dogs. Before the Garmins we had a lot more cold nosed dogs than we have today. Guys got to watching and figured out they were trailing around a swamp, not on a cold track but the same track. Back and forth for an hour.

Don't shoot me as I have a nice one out of Drop Dead Fred that I feel has a cold nose. Track dog first for me before tree. Just fall off that edge every once in a while with too much track. I hate that only second to a slick treeing dog.

I hunted with a track dog last night in Bartow GA. Old school behind the barn breeding that's been treeing them coons for the last 40 years. There are still good nosed track dogs that tree and have the coon.

I challenge any coon hunter that wants that in there dogs to ask me about it ..............I stand to gain nothing from this except to tell you they are still there.

There are quite a few dogs out west that are used on lions. I have never hunted one but a buddy of mine has. He said that the dog was good on the ground but would not tree. Other than this line, I am not sure of other lines. I owned some of the House's Chief dogs way back when and some folks thought they could cold trail but they could not in my opinion.
Until you hunt country where the annual rainfall is less than 15 inches and it has not rained in 3 or 4 months and over 100 degrees every day, you have no idea if your dog has a nose or not. Just my opinion.

I was speaking of the Nance dogs when I said that there were a few out west used on lions. I know that some of them are hunted in Southern AZ and that country is about as tough as it gets for trailing conditions.
Years ago, I was on a ranch near Dryden, TX when I spotted a lion on the side of a hill, stalking a whitetail buck. The lion saw me, squatted and then melted into the brush. My hounds were about an hour and a half away on another ranch so I took off to fetch them back. By the time I got back with the dogs, it was about 85 degrees and the wind was blowing 15-20 mph.
I dumped the dogs about half a dozen, and walked up the hill where I had seen the lion and then proceeded in the direction where I thought he left. Finally after a couple hundred yards, one of the females winded and went over to a bush sniffing and batting her tail. I feel like the lion, most likely a tom had marked that bush after he settled down for being spooked by me.
Had this happened in the mountains where I hunt most of the time, the dogs would have left there with their heads in the air, running full cry. The mountains have more timber and ground cover and it is generally cold and less wind. There is also more moisture in the ground which helps hold the scent.

ive hunted dogs a long time to me a cold nose good track dog should be able to push a track not stand on his head any kind of weather takes nose brains drive.most outstanding good nose track dogs will catch lots of coon on ground they will burn a hot track up .without that nose brains to tracking u just have a dog u can train any breed of dog to run tell it hits hot track and trees it.jmo

I agree that I don't like or want a dog to stand on its head. I have seen situations where they simply have to slow down and drag their nose when trailing an old track that is several days old, especially on dry ground. As I have said in the past, the most difficult thing for my dogs to learn is patience as they want to blow out on a track like most dogs with a lot of drive. Unfortunately, a dog that doesn't slow down and work the old track is not going to help you catch the lion.
