-- Do you believe there is a coon in those circle trees? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928463013)
,
Dan&Ann you are very correct about those pine trees. So correct I never vote to minus one in a hunt. Only time I have seen them misused is when someone needs the points to beat you and the majority goes against you.
I have a lot shorter pines and I have walked away from 20 foot pines shaking my head only to look back and see the coon. Have many times just shot up in the bud of the pine only to hit the coon I never saw. In my younger years my judging standards was to never minus a pine that had any height to it.

Some of them have coons and some of them don't. I believe that is why they "circle" them. It doesn't really matter whether you "believe" that there is a coon in a tree or not. If it is a circle tree it gets circled.
"When a dog strikes and trees on a tree where there could be a coon, yet none is seen"..... It doesn't say anything about what you "believe".
I have been on a cast where a dog made 7 circle trees. We never saw a coon and I didn't believe that he ever had one but we had to circle all 7 trees.
It seems that you guys want speed getting under a tree over accuracy.
I hunted 5 nights when I was at AO and and every night I hunted we treed 4 or 5 times and seen 1 coon I came home and have treed 8 times in 4 hunts and seen 8 coons that's what made me wright this post.
I'm not trying to put any ones dog down I just wanted to see what other people though.

Coonhunting has to start at home. That home is the persons heart and soul and mind that owns the dog. Think about this. Like anything else in life there are people that coonhunt which are at several different levels of the sport and understanding of dogs abilities.
Our coonhounds have a lot of different things they do. Please understand that there are a lot of young people or inexperienced people on here that are having a hard time just getting over the basics of what a hound should do. Many can't get their hounds to hunt, many can't get one that can track. Many can't find one that has the time to run a coon for running junk. PLEASE, I AM NOT PUTTING INEXPERIENCE OR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE DOWN. ALL OF US HAD IT AT ONE TIME. ALL OF US HAD TO START SOMEWHERE. Those that are inexperienced and finally get a hound to get over some the the basic hurdles like hunting hard, having a good nose and not afraid to do it alone. Are happy to have their dog park at a tree. Many in the beginning are happy with that 40 or 50% coonhound. At least now they are seeing some coon. It is the experience and actually the serous dedication and understanding that moves someone to have that better hound.
Here is the thing thats funny. I really don't care how many circle trees your dog makes in a hunt and I don't know why anyone else would either. Just makes that dog easier to beat. One gentleman mentioned winter time hunts. I have traveled from FL to the land of winter several times. We would be driving down the roads on the way to the hunts looking at the bare sticks in the fields laughing that there won't be many circle trees in the winter wonder land. Guys there are way to many. It isn't the trees, the dogs, the luck of the draw. It is the heart and soul on the man behind the dogs. Many come to win with a winner. Many are happy to just be their with their 50% hound. They paid their entry and have a right to be there. They even get lucky and win sometimes. But because the rules are written to keep everyone in the game during a hunt and at the end everyone feels they almost won. That doesn't mean you have a winner. Years of experience and being honest with yourself determines if you have a winner or not.

I think that everyone wants speed and accuracy. But sometimes you get the speed and sometimes you get the accuracy. Rarely do you get both. That is the reason most have gone to the super independant dogs. They don't have to be quick when they are by themselves.
I have seen coon hide their entire head. I have seen coons actually put their paws over their eyes. Many places I hunt the canopy is so thick it isn't unusual that you can't even see in the tree a dog is treeing on.
Do I think a coon is there is the question. You know what if I can't see it I can't see it. I mumble to my self that I hate leaves and leash the dog and walk away.
Now, once the leaves are off then is when I keep track of a dog's accuracy. Until then it is simply what it is. Nothing more and nothing less, it is an unknown. I can't change it. So while it my drive me nuts, I am not going to waste energy worrying about what i can't change.

A lot of people say that there is no difference in a good pleasure dog and a good competition dog but circle trees are a big difference. Circle trees are "judged" a lot different by pleasure hunters than they are by competition hunters.

I've been made fun of, on this board, for saying we shine trees for up to an hour sometimes. You'll find more coon than you think after that ten minutes is up. This includes trees without leaves. Coons have been hiding in trees far longer than any of us can even imagine. They're pretty good at.
Why minus the tree? Why not just not score it if the coon isn't seen? Just asking from a non competition hunter.
I think some are there. 3 or 4 in a row with dogs treeing several all around you. Nah. They ain't up there.

It's easy to judge from a computer when your not there.
Congrats to Sue on her World Championship win.
In that hunt there were 6 trees if you count all the trees that we shined
1 was a sapling and minused 2 dog were on that tree
1 had a coon my dog and another dog was I that tree
1 was deep and alone and was circled
3 were 1 dog and circled
So now that I though about it we had 6 trees and 1 coon seen so you think that 5 out off 6 trees the coon was covering his eyes ?

I think if there is no hole in the tree it should be minused.
Who's with me ?

I guess my point is if there is a coon in the tree you should be able to see it most of the time.
i though I might be able to post something that would get people to thinking and we all could learn something.
Wasnt there,so I can't really say either way,but I an a firm believer that if a coon was there you would see it....

Mr. George a lot of things can be said about circle trees but there is a lot to what you just posted. Some dogs no matter how thick, big, tall or viney a tree is, can produce coon eyes in them. Those are the dogs I cut a little slack, every once in a while when I can't find eyes. The rest of the dogs I just don't believe. lol
