Bad Experience

TSC or any Farm store bad experience. Vet or vet supply much better.

We don't get vaccines from distributors anymore. They come direct from the manufacturer to prevent quality control and handling issues. Your best bet in preventing vaccines from being mishandled is to buy it from a Veterinarian. The second best would be buying it from a reputable online seller like Foster and Smith. They get their vaccines direct from the manufacturer as well.

Vaccines

Bill is right the manufacturers must meet requirements. Heck the truck that ships the same vaccines to the vet could screw up and let them spend too much time in the heat. Also another problem is many people just give one or two shots and then wonder why their pups get it. The first shot nullifies the immunity from the mother, the second shot gives some coverage, the third shot brings immunity up that is what I was always told. I've used TSC vaccines for yrs with no problems.

While your veterinarian is always the best guide for making vaccination decisions, the American Animal Hospital Association’s 2006 vaccination guidelines recommend the following schedule for parvovirus vaccination:
• Puppies should receive a minimum of three vaccinations between 6 and 16 weeks old, no more frequently than every three to four weeks with the final dose at 14 to 16 weeks.
• Initial adult vaccination (and for puppies older than 16 weeks of age) ideally consists of two vaccines three to four weeks apart, though one vaccine is considered protective.
• All dogs should receive one vaccine one year after the final puppy vaccination.
• Continued adult revaccination is recommended at every-three-year intervals.

Canine parvovirus is a common viral disease that is caused by the canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) virus. The virus attacks the gastrointestinal tract and immune system of puppies and dogs, causing severe vomiting and diarrhea. It can also attack the hearts of very young puppies.

CPV-2 is highly contagious and spread through direct contact with infected dogs or infected feces. It is easily carried on hands, food dishes, leashes, shoes, etc. The virus is very stable in the environment and can survive for more than a year in feces and soil through extremes of heat, cold, drought, or humidity. Though 85 percent to 90 percent of treated dogs survive, the disease requires extensive supportive patient care and can be expensive to treat. In untreated dogs, the mortality rate can exceed 90 percent.

Vaccination, however, is highly effective.

Parvo vaccination is definitely one of the biggest medical success stories of modern science and technology. We follow the AAHA guidelines and we are an AAHA Member Hospital. We recommend 4 Parvo vaccines starting at the time of weaning and then following up every 3 weeks until the pup is 16 weeks of age. That last vaccination at or after 16 weeks is really key. For pups in highly endemic areas or for certain breeds that appear to be more susceptible to Parvo, like Rotweillers, we recommend the last Parvo vaccine be done at 20 weeks of age. 3 week intervals between Parvo vaccination is also the recommendation by vaccine manufacturers.

As far as the quality control on vaccinations we receive from the manufacturers, they don't ship near the weekends and they ship next day in chilled coolers. When we receive the vaccinations they are checked to be sure they are still cool and the cool packs are still cold. If the contents aren't cooled, we send them back. We don't take any chances. It's our reputation on the line more so than the manufacturer when it comes to protecting our clients puppies.

My vet told me that parvovirus has evolved over time and the parvo in the tractor supply shots are from strains of parvo from 20+ years ago so vaccinating with it is worthless because the strains of parvo now are different. Has anyone else heard anything like that?

No I don't believe that, the manufacturers must meet USDA current requirements, here is the 5-1 that they use:

Durvet Canine Spectra 5 is a combination of immunogenic, attenuated strains of Canine Distemper, Canine Adenovirus Type 2 (CAV-2), Canine Parainfluenza, and Canine Parvovirus Type 2b, propagated in cell line tissue cultures. The CAV-2 fraction cross-protects against respiratory infection caused by infectious canine hepatitis (CAV-1).
•For the vaccination of healthy, susceptible dogs and puppies as an aid in the reduction of diseases caused by canine distemper, canine adenovirus types 1 and 2, parainfluenza, and parvovirus.
•Contains type 2b parvovirus for rapid immunity and cross protection against all recognized field strains. High titer, low passage parvo fraction. High vaccine titers have been shown to overcome low-level maternal antibody interference in puppies. High titer, low passage parvo fraction. •Meets or exceeds all USDA Standards.
•Convenient choice of IM or SC administration.
•Ideal first shot for puppies - no Lepto fractions.
