Ive seen bear well over 500 and in a tree but treeing one out of 10 that size isn't considered getting it done. Big bear down east will go to middle of the bays and just stop, dogs go catching them hard they will back up to a blow down and wait they will go thru your pack in a hurry. Big bear don't cut dogs up they kill them when they catch them, don't believe me load up and head down east. Small bear are faster and cut a lot of dogs up big bear pull them in bite them and that's the end of that one and he will wait on the next you have to crawl in and just about touch them with the barrel before you can get them killed.

Zallison, I agree 100% with what you posted. Running bear in heavy brush is a total different ball game. That is why the west coast guys say if you think you have bear dogs bring them to the coast. Interior western rockstar bear dogs can get brush whipped real quick.

mountain bear

after 40 years hunting bear in idaho with hounds the hardest bear on my hounds is a 130 pound sow , I've seen it over and over , there's just somthing about those 2 yr old sow's that can wade thru a pack of hounds of any color or breed ,,, all you can hope for is that after the whippin is all over you still have dogs that will bounce back and keep tickin
