-- What Are you Breeding For???? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928444521)

Allen- I know I would!! I know she has alot of the great hunting charateristics that we need in alot are competition style hounds

She is an outcross from a result of line breeding.

So how do we mimic and also improve are breed faster so we can start competing with thsese other breeds on a higher level, while still using the resources we have?

I would also to hear like to T-Mac's take on this. I know he has been around and knows the style of dogs I'm talking about. Heck I first met him at the SS a few years ago. My dad and myself have guided him there.

Talking

My honest opinion is youve got to have one with HEART & DRIVE! You can't put heart in a dog! When I unsnap one I want them to leave me like they are late for work & go do whatever they've got to do to get under a coon in a quick manner! I like 1 that's natural independent & I can't stand 1 to stand on there head, I love a good strike dog but Cali has proved to me that you can win consistently striking for 25 as long as they're fast & accurate about it... I'm more of a fan of line breeding, I've had better results with it, if you like what a line is doing why change or fix something that's not broken to you? 1st & foremost I feel that after all the homework you do in the breeding pen, you've got to put the leg work in, a dog can't make a good one if it sets in the kennel & doesn't matter how well bred it is... The guys you see winning at national level are the ones that are putting the time into there dog, they don't win on luck, they win on dog power! Good Luck to everyone this year with there redbones! I hope to see more big winning redbones in the future!

Just remembered "the harder you practice, the luckier you get"

Interesting Questions

I've thought about this post quite a bit since Jared posted it. Not exactly sure where I lean as far as a competition dog in my area. We live in a tough area of thinner coon and seen just about every style or at least close to it as many have described in their post and have noticed positive and negative with all of them.

For example, I've told folks before that a dead loner and a very deep hunting dog isn't necessarily the best option where we live. While the cast is scoring a coon within 500 yards, the dead loner has blown through and I've witnessed the hour get them several times. If they get treed within hearing then it's okay but doesn't happen to often because of terrain and most are not going to walk up to the top of a mountain because a guy is looking at his garmin hoping his dog is treed over there. It's one thing to hunt a never come back dog in mostly flat country where there are some roads you can drive around to get closer vs 15,000 acres with one way in and one way out.

As far as style, I'm pretty open to a dog that trees coon any way he can, but there are a couple things I definitely don't like. I can't stand a babbler. I can't stand one that never shuts up from the time you cut them till you get them off a tree. Some people I think breed for that. Just not my thing. Can't stand one that keeps going back to the same tree either.

So, my perspective on a competition dog may be a little different just because of where we live. Does that mean I would not hunt a dog that was a dead loner and never come back.....nope, probably would if I liked him/her enough. But some big time competition hunters have told me that they would quit hunting if they had to hunt where we do all the time. I hunted a pup last night, went straight up the mountain, got on top, hunted the top for 2 hours and 1.2 miles one way. The pup hunted a total of 10 miles ( that's every step by the garmin), never struck a coon but he got plenty of exercise. To bad we can't walk him behind the barn and find a coon just sitting in a tree like some places.

What am I breeding for? Well, to not make it complicated...when I make a cross it is to keep myself and friends in good dogs who tree coons and hopefully produce dogs that makes other people proud to own them. I love hearing from folks who are having success with the line we hunt.

For the majority of people this sport is a hobby, it is for me and sometimes I can take it way to seriously than I personally should. But I do enjoy it because of the friends I have made and the fun we have no matter where we are.

Sadly, because of this hobby, I can't even afford another truck, my dodge now has 377,600 miles on it and making strange noises so I just turn the radio up louder and hope I make it to the next hunt.

Jared,

I have hunted all over the country and hunted against some top dogs in both registries:

Personally: What am I breeding for

1.) Heart and desire to compete: I have stuck with a combination of Fireball, Yellow River line of dogs over the years because they seem to hustle, accurate, independent, and recently with the Breeding of Chili to Steve-o brought in another line bred dog with some characteristics like the ability to get treed quick.

Your comment about linebred dogs not winning the big hunts: I assume you are talking about the Red dogs because most of the big name walker dogs are line bred just check the pedigree. I don't believe the fault is our line breeding but a combination of breeding: (How we train them and hunt them) Most good competition dogs aren't necessarily that fun to hunt thru the week pleasure hunting) Most of the redbone hunters don't have someone to foot the bill for them to attend hunts, travel all over, etc..or have paid handlers.

If you want to be competitive then you have to hunt the dog hard and mix it up like you are in a competition hunt lead them from a dog treed cut them again and get them used to the conditions you will see in big hunts: (Just like an athlete they need to be physically prepared and mentally) I have had a couple of nice hounds that competed with some of the better hounds around at the time and won just didn't have the money or time to push them like I wish I could have.

I suggest going to hunt with some of the better hounds out there to see how they perform. Hunt with there off spring to see if they are throwing similar traits. BUY a new pair of boots and hit the woods night after night.

I personally think we can get there in the breed: and if I wanted to hunt a walker then I would buy one. But I get great satisfaction when I win a cast or hunt: against some tough dogs with an ALL RED dog. JMO

Does it take some of the satisfaction away when you know that your dog is only half Redbone? I know that it did for me when I tried it. I felt like I had cheated.

I agree about the terrains that we hunt can make a difference in a dogs performance. There are times when the dogs in my part of the country can tree several coons in a quick manner usually summer time when kittens first start moving. But this time of year you are not gonna tree many coons like that here. Not sayin you cant but where I hunt highly unlikely. I love a dog with speed on both ends and the young dog im huntin seems to have enough of what im lookin for I like him anyways. I dont go to a bunch of hunts but I go to some local hunts and my dog is competitive with any of these I have hunted with he has a really bad handler though. I dont have a bunch of cash to spend running here and there to these hunts like others do to see the competition that some of you guys see. So here it is again if anyone has a dog that can flat bust a move amd tree two or three coons this time of year in my country I would like to see your dog go. I will put you up for the night and feed ya so if you think you got it I wanna see it. Im no breeder I just buy pups that have nice pedigrees and a solid background of nice hounds and hope for the best

Well said Mike, all too common here and the further west I travel within the state as well. If they ain't on that coon within hearing then sometimes they slap outta luck. However, I would never walk away tail tucked if I lost then had to go find mine after the 2 hours treed with a coon all by himself. Sure, I lost, but Monday-Thursday I know what I got.

So, I think you're spot on, good info to add!

I hear this talk about Big consistant winners being "freaks". Fact is they are just consistant coondogs that do what they are supposed to as a competition hound and get put in a ton of hunts to even win as much as they do. " Consistant Coondogs" Those are the ones that win and win big. Yes they have to do all the things that as been mentioned here but is that really a freak? Before anyone questions the lvl of dogs I have seen because they dont know me I can assure you I have hunted with World Champs from different KCs. I drew the guy and dog sitting in the new truck of the March magazine 3 times in the last couple of years. IMO if someone considers these big winners freaks they should reconsider what they are looking for on thier lead. To me they are just good, consistant coondogs that get hunted hard and entered in all the big hunts.
