I just got Wilma back from Rex today. She will have pups in 58 days. Is it too soon to start calling them "good prospects"?
I don't believe that most dogs receive the chance to be a good prospect. The biggest reason is that most hunters have too many dogs. You're kidding yourself if you think you can get the most out of a young dog if you have 4 or 5 others to also train. If you have a young dog that has the running and treeing traits that you like, you need to focus on hunting the hair off of that dog. Lots of dogs will run and tree a coon but that's not enough for me. A good prospect at my house can't wait to jump in the truck, steps out of the box when I say it's name to get its collars on, once we arrive to our hunting spot the dog should come out ready to hunt, it comes to me when called and leads like a show dog. Running and treeing a variety of types of coon takes a lot of hunting and boot leather on your part. These are just my opinions based on high expectations.

A good prospect is defined in so many different ways.... Personally for a young dog to really trip my trigger he/ she needs to have a good sounding/carrying mouth. If I don't enjoy to listen to them it's hard for me to put in the extra work to prepare them for competition. Also, it must have lots of hunt. Now I'm not talking about going a mile every turn loose, but I do not want one that Is lazy and trots off when you go to turn it loose. I also prefer an open trailing coondog that takes his tracks as they come to them and they must be heads up track dog. I would rather a dog try to run a track then just straddle a track and trail it up. Basically like a hound that has tons of hustle and heart!!!
