i got a buddy that makes his own feed some put's it in a big cast iron pot outside not sure what all he puts in it but after cooking it lets it thicken up cut in strips and freeze it till he feds it says dogs do really good on it
When I fish I save all the trash fish for the dogs. I trim the sharp things off, toss them on the grill a ffew minutes and freeze them. Then I give one to each of the dogs from time to time. I also give mine select table scraps, not the real fatty stuff though.

To learn about feeding, what works and what does not, feeding schedules and how the feed works...
Search pitbull and sled dog forums.
Those 2 type of dog folk have a VERY good understanding of what it takes.
Both generally use different methods as both dogs do different styles of work.
You learn from both and take what applies.
Some of the stuff mentioned here is probably doing more harm than good... you have to be OK with learning and understanding there are folks who know more than you.

kris, are you saying: some of the stuff mentioned here, meaning on this UKC topic, or on the pitbull, sled dog sites?

taste of the wild is the best I have ever fed, followed by pro plan sport.
You said you had him on a self feeder. Personally I'm not a fan, you cannot control how much they eat, can't mix it with water, can't add supplements... If he quit eating 2 days ago...how would you know?
If he isn't used to a quality feed, he will poop everywhere if you just give it to him in a self feeder.
Also when they eat is important, I have found by splitting the feeding times in 2 between breakfast and post hunting, I can feed more without the dogs getting the runs. With most 3 cups is the most they can handle at one time, with out getting the runs.
You could also try a treatment of doxycycline, Lymes will destroy a dogs level of endurance.
Worms will reduce there energy as well
Your dog goes back to sunrise aient?

I used to be really interested in sled dogging. I went to Alaska and while I was there spoke to some of the guys that run the idetirod. Many have their own secret recipe. Many buy 50 lb blocks of frozen fish. they cut it up and feed it to the dogs still frozen. fisherman up there catch a trash fish that is only good for dog food and such.

I feed purina proplan 30/20. I kill a lot of deer, and I save all of the scraps when I am processing them. I usually have enough to feed them deer a couple of times a week until spring. They get a lot of fish scraps until the next deer season. If I don't hunt mine down, they can get a little fat, but they never run out of energy.

Out of curiosity... what do the dogs get, specifically, from the scraps or deer?

I do the same, rib and kneck meat etc.., i leave all the fat on mine though run it thru the grinder and boil it then feed it that way
The deer looks like a coyote got to it when im done, youd be surprised how much you can get by cleanin one up real good

I feed mine raw. Put it in vacuum sealed bags. Thaw it out and throw it in their bowl.

I too use the deer carcass after people get what they want from it. most folks leave a lot of meat on dem bones. I also use the heart. I give it to the dogs raw or I might cook it with rice and vegetables.

quote:When I hunted all day with my german shorthair I would give him some deer meat and always took lots of water that seemed to give him a boost. I feed my bluetick purina dog chow, sometimes mixed with scrape meat and fat.Now that I'm closing in on 60! I always wear out way before he does so it seems to work!

Anybody ever try feeding in the middle of a long hunt. When I had bird dogs, I would give them a can of Alpo at lunch time. It sure gave them a boost for the afternoon hunt.

I think the main thing they mix with their feed is fish and seal fat,i was watching the iditarod race and that was the main mix most was using with their feed from what i seen and they said on there.
