-- Is our sport dying ? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928435656)
When it comes to our youth the sky is the limit. I totally agree with all programs that anyone comes out with or has come out with.. These programs should never be change at all for any reason what so ever. It is an uphill battle all the way to get the youth more evolved in the sport and to get them to come to the hunts with having all the outside enflunces that can keep them away. I may be wrong but I think it would make it a little easier when you do have youths that show up at a local night hunt to be able to place them on a cast to themselves. It all has to start at the local clubs in order to grow. I think or may be wrong.
I lke the idea of clubs having the option of hunting the kids together, they wouldnt be intimidated hunting against their peers and if they were assigned a good nonhunting judge it would also be educational.

Didn't post this to put down anybody's program what so ever just really have been having a good time with these young people latley seeing the excitement when they win kinda reminds me of the way I used to feel !! The last cast the two young men told me that was the most fun they have had in a long time alot of grown ups just absolutly expect you to wait on them hand and foot without even a thank you. And then there's the I didn't get beat thing I get cheated every time so this was just somthing that was heavy on my heart if anybody needs me I am always ready to help !! Robert Hitt 580-341-8060
This is the exact reason i became a hunter education instructor.

Anyone on here aware of a couple FACEBOOK PAGES for Youth Hunters.
YOUTH the future of coon hunting
Youth Coonhunters
These are two up and running pages. I suggest you stop by there on your way to this message board in the morning and see what new and encourage some conversation with the Youth.
See whats going on and you may be surprised there is something in your backyard that you could help with.
Before you come on here and say you don't now anything about Facebook let me ruffle some feathers this morning and say, that is part of the problem. The problem is the Kids don't want to hang around with a bunch of old people not willing to meet them in their world.
I apologize for sounding harsh about this but there is so much more we can do for young people. The facts are that many people are involved but many just want to talk about it and not seek the kids to help.
I say that if you want to see the biggest problems with kids not being in the hunts, just look in the mirror. Then once you start liking what you see in the mirror maybe the kids will also.
The sad side of all this no matter how hard you try, I think it is almost normal for there to be differences in the generations that keep us apart. Won't mention any names but I have introduced 2 generations to a Coonhunting GURU that didn't see him with the respect I do. That has been eye opening for me and gives me insight that I have to work harder when I am around young people. Please share in that with me and WORK HARDER around the youngsters to meet them at their level without compromising your morals and values. Most of them need that but they need it with a friendly face and kind voice guiding them.
I actually think stuff like Facebook is helpin to ruin kids. I will refuse. Kids nowadays dont know how to have a face to face conversation. And they spend so much time on theses gadgets instead of doin anythin productive. I don't have facebook. Never have. Wife runs a kennel page. And I can say this cause it's my generation that really was the first to be raised with this mind numbin brainwashin mess. I graduated in 2004. I got wrapped up in the video games aol instant messenger and the yahoo. I'm out first computer that got hooked up to the internet. Other than this phone I got last spring I haven't had internet or just as bad tv in 6 years. And love my life more than ever and have closer friends than anyone iv ever had to Facebook with.

I truly respect your beliefs, but if your ever going to win a war you have to get in the battlefield.
I graduated in 1967 and the phones had big round circles you put your fingers in to dial.
I manage several Facebook pages and very few times is there any content that is not appropriate. Trust me you can find plenty of that on Facebook but you can control it also, especially if the content is about hunting, friends and dogs.
I went this morning and saw a few pictures of kids and their hounds on a bench. I told them all Congratulations and keep up the good work. I hope just that little bit of recognition form someone they don't know or will every see gives them the feeling they have to do it again.
The good news is, there is more than one way to help the kids and if your against Facebook then who am I to disagree.
Seek out and help the kids anyway you can.
I have four grand kids and my Sons boy and girl was raised with out any rap music, video games and internet. My daughters kids had access to all that. Good news is I found out it wasn't what the kids did but the parents interactions with them that guided them to be productive members of society. In other words two of the kids are as crazy as the other two, in a good way. lol
Mr Bruce I thought everything was going good we had ideas, we had dialogue, we had honesty. Myself I am not the same Robert Hitt I used to be at one time I was not a nice person but I always tried to do everything by the book you catch people in things and you call them out on it they spend they're whole life paying you back!! By the grace of god I work every day trying to change and help people that need it you would be surprised at the major players in this sport that are the worst role models but these kids look up to them they want to be them all they see is the bling bling all I have to say is if I offended you in any way I apologize ! But some of the things going on at the hunts today absolutly make a man stay at home I for one just don't want it bad enough anymore but I do like watching the young people get excited about coonhunting just a well known phrase then I will go( ye who is without sin cast the first stone )
That's why I try to help face to face. It's one thing seein a picture of a kid happy. Id rather be there showin them. If i can help local kids with my spare time then I don't need to see the pictures. I was there. I ain't worried all that much about non locals.

Yadkintar I agree 100% with what you just said. I will say it again, I agree 100%
Here is the kicker. I am aware of that. If I was not mentoring some young people to be better sportsman and coonhunters I would not even go to a night hunt.
Thing is I have two choices in life. Be positive or be negative. Being negative keeps you away. Being Positive keeps you in the game. Doesn't mean you have to like the game, doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware of how the game is played. But it does keep me in the game just in case I can make a difference is one young person life. Because I cannot make a difference if I am not trying.
You know what I have been thinking about ever since seeing the idea about the cast only for Youths. Is how an adult will manipulate that to get wins on their dogs and how many performance points they can rack up along the way.
Mr. Blue we don't all do things the same way. Here is a good thought I will leave you all with.
"We shouldn't dwell on our differences but share what we have in common."
In this case that is coonhounds and an atmosphere in coonhunting the Youth would want to be around.
Your face to face I know does wonders for some go the Youth in your area.
Yadkintar you don't offend my in any way. I learn from everything you write. I have two choices. I can light the campfire and we all sing a song and probably not accomplish much on a message board. Or I can use my experiences to bring a slightly different viewpoint to the game. Doesn't mean mine is right and it doesn't mean yours in wrong. Somewhere in the middle if we all work at it, is the answer.
Mr Bruce the young folks I have been hunting against are hunting they're own dogs I didn't lay back on them they beat my rump 3 of them are in the top standings in chkc all they're dogs are Grntchs witch they did they're selfs and you know what I feel good about it that coming from a guy that didn't used to take a beating very good I might add all of them conduct them selfs very respectfull !!
.
I think CHKC with what little I know about your area is trying to do some good things for the YOUTH. At least it seems that way because several are hunting their hunts. Including several female youth with is another plus.
Mr Bruce I want to personlly thank you I know you do a lot of things to help people as does the Ramsey family without asking for nothing in return !! Personlly right now I am going to take a step back I have a young dog I am excited about I have never been one to hunt one in the hunts until they are ready witch comes with age. Plus as I said before I got my last kid in college and it's expensive but he comes first if there's anything I can ever help you with all you have to do is ask your friend Robert Hitt.
First off I want to thank you guys like Bruce that are doing so much to help with continuous education of Coon hunting for the youth I think that's very important to the sport.
Now, this is strictly my opinion of all this for the young guys related to the sport dying. The sport we are talking about is Coon hunting and preserving the sport for years to come. Keep one thing in mind always, People are just like dogs and vice versus, not all of them are good . God created us that way. Its like that for a reason. If you don't have the money or time to competition hunt stay home and work on your dog and make them better. Enjoy life and its surroundings because I promise you it will pass you by very quickly. You don't have to be in the competition side of it to enjoy it because gentlemen every year there is a new world champion, You might win it this year and before next year rolls around no one will remember your name. What you do for yourself and your family and being happy with your dogs will last you a long time. I've learned this the hard way. We will push a lot of things out of our lives for competition and when you do you cant get that time back.
Example; when I was young and playing sports my dad was either working to provide for the family or off coon hunting and traveling to the hunts and into the competition side of things. He drug me around when I got big enough a little but I was off playing baseball. I don't remember him at any ballgames and such. He and I are best of friends and hunting partners now and I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world but always remember why your our there doing what your doing. Just do what your doing for the right reason and just remember the competition isn't for everyone all the time and never neglect your loved ones and kids for the sake of competition.
I get asked all the time why I don't go to the hunts, I have two girls and they are playing ball and fastpitch is even more time consumed now than ever. I help coach one team and support both of them all I can with what they are into. I stay involved with the coon hunting though by starting and selling pups to competition and pleasure hunting. I can involve my kids and wife with this and it allows me to stay home with them until they are grown. They along with my wife love the dogs and messing with the pups. I know its not for everyone but I wouldn't trade it for the world. To me a true coon dog is boring , when they get where they can tree a coon consistently they need to go somewhere else and give someone pleasure that likes that. Good Luck to you guys ! Coon Hunting as taught me a lot about Patience, People and Faith .
If you want to keep our sport alive....
TAKE A KID HUNTING!!
They will never learn to love the sport of coon hunting sitting on their butts at home.
Don't have a kid? I'm sure there's one in your neighborhood......
