Heck post the date and hunt you are going to attend and maybe a few of us will show up to boot!

I don't competition hunt I coon hunt. I'm as competitive as any person that you know I just don't care for comp hunting. Mainly for the fact that if you beat my dog I like to know he was out dogged and you treed more coons than I did in a nights time. not that he was beat by points but once again that's my opinion you may feel completely different and that's fine do what makes you happy. But any time you feel like making a drive I welcome a little competition.

There are a lot of poor crosses but from what I understand that is a story as old as time. Second when you talk of a competition hunter or hunting your probably referencing local club level. Often guys are hunting pups that just are not ready or not the best dogs. I think thats ok though, every one has to start somewhere. To me the local level is more about just spreading the sport and having fun. My guess is there are a few guys, or a club or two. That are a little more serious, set there goals higher and have the dog power that you or I would expect to see. The funny thing is the dog you describe that you prefer, is the same type of dog that most hardcore national competing handlers I know desire. There just not that easy to come by. If you feel what your packing is that strong, I would get out there compete more and on a state or national level. Trust me the guys driving 3 to 4 hrs for a $$$ hunt aren't packing a dog that is gonna stand at your feet and slick tree 50 yards away.
I'm not judging every one as a whole as I said in the beginning of my post. just by people the majority of the people that I've talked to and been around in the last couple of years I know there are some great breeders and great hounds out there just from what I've experienced lately is a lot of people breeding and hunting trash it's like a lot but by far not all of the comp hunters I've been around are willing to keep lesser dogs around just because of what his papers say.

Yeah I can agree with that, the flip side of that is a dog with good papers is a lot easier to get rid of. Papers are a starting place, I have had better luck when I stick to names I know on the papers. Judging by your previous posts you could try looking into trying some whitey. He threw wide hunting accurate hounds

That's kinda what I'm getting at a dog with papers is easier to get rid of not saying that you personally are getting rid of necessarily bad dogs chances are they just may not be what your looking for. But a lot of people are and doing it with culls on a daily basis. plain and simple dogs that are culls should be culled not sold just because of what his papers say. but thanks for the advice on a blood line I will look into Whitey.

You certainly have a point there something wick wrote once that has stuck with me, is that he said papers should be made up with the breeders names not the dogs. He made the point you will be much better off purchasing your dogs based upon who is breeding them or selling the dog then the names on the dogs papers. That has stuck with me. I recently inquired about a semen pup, out of a dog that I really fancy, unfortunately even though I'm sure the breeder had best of intentions I have never heard of him, and got the sense that he was fairly inexperienced at breeding. I ended up passing on the dog. I wish I could say I know I made the right decision in the end I guess I will never know. I do know it takes a a lot of time and energy to make a pup into a coon dog, and I am very gun shy about getting a pup from someone I know nothing about regardless of the papers.

As far as whitey goes Jed finely has that trader dog, he has a really good reputation for owning a quality hound Joe Newlin with Oak ridge kennels has been line breeding on whitey for sometime. He would be a good place to start. There is an eli stone dog doing a bunch of winning in $kc I have my eye on right now. He is skuna river bark bred, they have a little more grit and are a little more natural then whitey dogs in my opinion. Skuna River originated from tn. I believe.

Who really cares about the trade dogs after a while you can spot them a mile away!lol
