I personally would be tickled if they werent worth anything ever again!! Hunted some of the best state land in all of ohio tuesday night and never saw another truck or even heard another dog treed all night. The hide hunters come out of the woodwork in my part of the country when season comes in for a 3.00 coon, Im not seeing any of that this year so far and like it.

I am with nick on this the hide hunters around me have quite hunting because of the low prices and the coon population as grown this year and i like it.

Habitat has way more to do with coon population than hunting pressure and if they dont get harvested mother nature will thin them.

Key is a Balance

I think we need a balance , if we don't shoot/harvest then mother nature takes over and she is more cruel than any hunter around. I personally don't want to see 20 or 30 dollar coon again and not because the hide hunters come out, it is because of the dog thiefs. They steal up north and take south and sell and they steal down south and sell up north. JMO

Tradition

For me it's more of a tradition. I've skinned coon for 45 years and I enjoy kill season. I do not kill a bunch of coon but when we get a big one on the ground, it just seems like a waste to just leave it lie. I'd just as soon leave it up the tree as on the ground. Me and my friend both have very young hounds were running this year and we'll probably take a few more than usual so I will still peal those big ones out. It's not about the money, I gave that up years ago. Back in the day in the mid to late 70s, I lived in Indiana and my old hound bought our kids Christmas a couple years but other than that I haven't made enough to even think about a profit. It's not about the $$$ for me, it's just a way of life that has been handed down for generations. It's kind of like shooting a big buck just for the rack. Yes we all like big bucks but you can bet I'll be enjoying the rest of that critter as well!! What it boils down to is to each his own. What ever you like to do, just do it

In areas with low coon populations I can see not shooting them. Here in lower Michigan though it is another story. Coons are key predators to other game animals such as turkeys. Coons usually already have high population numbers if we don't shoot them distemper is always very willing to thin the population much worse than any hunting pressure.

My solution will be to hopefully create a working relationship with a local furrier. I am want to supply him with well handled skins so he can produce more of his own work, and maybe I will ask him to make me some garments in the future.

I got $25 for a coyote that wasn't skinned $7 for deer hides and averaged $3.30 on coon with top $6 and that was on a 31 pound black coon
