Totally agree whith ya

Here's another idea to less you shoot less gas $ you got to spendy to go tree something.. Make up for your little bit fur $ this way ..

This was about 8-10 years ago. I had several hunting spots that got hit. It took a couple years for the population to rebound. It also leads to more farmers using fly bait and other poisons to annihilate coons year round indiscriminately.

Between trapping and hunting me and two buddies killed over 800 coons two years ago. Went back in the spring to the same spots and you could not even tell we had been there.

Idk about where some of you guys live, but in most parts of the Midwest you could never shoot enough to affect the hunting.

AMEN! I've told guys over and over, the best thing you can do is kill every one you tree. If there is food and cover there will just as many or more next year. Disease and poison from overpopulation will do way more damage.

(This may only apply to the Midwest. I don't have any idea about other areas where coon are thin and more scarce. )

I personally would be tickled if they werent worth anything ever again!! Hunted some of the best state land in all of ohio tuesday night and never saw another truck or even heard another dog treed all night. The hide hunters come out of the woodwork in my part of the country when season comes in for a 3.00 coon, Im not seeing any of that this year so far and like it.

We , in Illinois, can keep hides as long as we want IF they are not "green". Meaning if they are fleshed they can be kept. If a coon has been skinned but no flesh taken off the hide, we can't keep that hide long.

I am with nick on this the hide hunters around me have quite hunting because of the low prices and the coon population as grown this year and i like it.

No value in hides is another nail in the coffin for the sport.
Habitat has way more to do with coon population than hunting pressure and if they dont get harvested mother nature will thin them.

No offense and i'm against spot lighters but re-read your post and look how selfish it sounds. There is nothing wrong with hide hunters. Anyone that coon hunts weather they kill them or not is fine by me. We need more hunters not fewer. It's like showing up to a competition hunt hoping you are the only dog in your class.

Hide hunters make up the majority of our sport.

Exactly.

There are plenty of coons to go around. Everywhere

TSBTATER HAS IT RIGHT

FOR THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY. COONS NEED KILLED OR WE WON'T HAVE ANY. BEEN AT THIS FOR 40 YEARS AND HAVE SEEN THE EFFECTS OF TO MANY COONS AND NO HUNTING/TRAPPING PRESSURE. <v>

Key is a Balance

I think we need a balance , if we don't shoot/harvest then mother nature takes over and she is more cruel than any hunter around. I personally don't want to see 20 or 30 dollar coon again and not because the hide hunters come out, it is because of the dog thiefs. They steal up north and take south and sell and they steal down south and sell up north. JMO

You said a mouth full right there Mr. Link!

Sometimes the irony, or maybe the hypocrisy on some of these threads is astounding.

Tradition

For me it's more of a tradition. I've skinned coon for 45 years and I enjoy kill season. I do not kill a bunch of coon but when we get a big one on the ground, it just seems like a waste to just leave it lie. I'd just as soon leave it up the tree as on the ground. Me and my friend both have very young hounds were running this year and we'll probably take a few more than usual so I will still peal those big ones out. It's not about the money, I gave that up years ago. Back in the day in the mid to late 70s, I lived in Indiana and my old hound bought our kids Christmas a couple years but other than that I haven't made enough to even think about a profit. It's not about the $$$ for me, it's just a way of life that has been handed down for generations. It's kind of like shooting a big buck just for the rack. Yes we all like big bucks but you can bet I'll be enjoying the rest of that critter as well!! What it boils down to is to each his own. What ever you like to do, just do it

I AM LIKE YOU RON

50 DOLLARS OR 50 CENTS, IT'S HIDE SEASON AND THAT'S WHAT WE DO. <v>

In areas with low coon populations I can see not shooting them. Here in lower Michigan though it is another story. Coons are key predators to other game animals such as turkeys. Coons usually already have high population numbers if we don't shoot them distemper is always very willing to thin the population much worse than any hunting pressure.

My solution will be to hopefully create a working relationship with a local furrier. I am want to supply him with well handled skins so he can produce more of his own work, and maybe I will ask him to make me some garments in the future.

I got $25 for a coyote that wasn't skinned $7 for deer hides and averaged $3.30 on coon with top $6 and that was on a 31 pound black coon
