Your pup is still young. I wouldnt really worry alot about him missing right now. hes running and treeing and thats a big plus. sounds like a big hunting dog and thats a plus. hes haveing problems with dogs and hes to young to work on with dogs so id hunt him alone 85% of the time till he gets close to a year old then id start hunting him with dogs 85% of the time but only with dogs that look to get alone and id make him get alone too. differnt methods to this and if u dont know exactly how to do this then dont do it at all cause the wrong way will hurt more than it helps. but hunting with loners will take the pressure off of him to finish first. good luck with your pup he sounds like the right kind.

just keep hunting him and not giving him coon and see what you end up with, if I had a 7 month old pup that was treeing coon I would shoot every coon he treed , every one will say you do not have to give them coon, but if he was mine he would be a top hound before a year old.

I have seen this a few times.Guy has a hard hunting, early starting, natural countreer and then hunts it with a bunch of crazy strange dogs.He may even win a few hunts with this young gun. Those crazy strange dogs tree slicks, possums and run deer. Then the young coontreer has its wires crossed and acts just like the dogs it's been hunted with. They are what you hunt them with.It seems to me young dogs start out honest and accurate but once they get hunted with crazy dogs they turn crazy and dishonest just like the rest.Only cure I know is to hunt them solo in a place that has coons.Hope that made sense and good luck.
thats why you never hunt a young dog with other dogs keep him by himself for one season then carry him with other dog every now and then keep him up till you can put fur in his face

i have been hunting him alone about 90 percent of the time and like I said he had gotten much better. Also now when I do hunt him with another dog he does his own thing could care less what the other dog is doing. I've got him straightened out and he is on track and making a super nice young dog. I just have to remind my self that he is 7 months old and not to be to hard on him.

Age doesnt matter if the pup is getting consistant you know when u got a good chance of him treein the coon he strikes id say around a yr. ulually if hes been hunted like this guy is or 3-4 nights a week thats when i start putting them in situations id see in a hunt set em up then hunt em alone a drop then set em up then drop em alone. this pup should be perfect for this come season when u can reward him and kno for sure when he screws up one thing ive found is you canot fix issues with other dogs alone they need to be fixed in a cast setup but to each his own i giess.
Hunting a dog alone is great i love hunting alone but it does not make them independent. that is a trait you can pound it into them sure but why does a dog need to be so independant? Answer they are slow thats the only reason. if you go to a hunt you will draw crap and a dog that hasnt been prepared will slip up period thats when u hear i just dont know whay happened he doesnt usually do this!! Well i say prepare the dog for it all.
like I've stated the pup is back on track and doing a super job. I have had very good luck starting and finishing out pups. I don't claim to know everything so sometimes when a situation comes up I have a good idea how to go about fixing it but I like to ask for others input just to see if there are some good ideas I haven't thought of. Half the people on this board have not the slightest idea how to train a pup but have no problem stating their crazy ideas if they ever had a pup turn out it would be a miracle. the other half have some good ideas. I weed threw the ideas and consider the pup and then go from there as to what I think will work best for this particular pup because all pups aren't the same and need different methods of training for the exact same problems

I had one do the same as yours then i thought if i pulled him away and hunted him alone it would make him independant but actually made him more of a pack dog funny how dogs are differant i started hunting with a fella who had a bunch of culls and went to work on him the dog figured it out twice as fast!!lol so i just took it a step further with the one i have now started this method at about 13-14 mths. old and saved a lot of headaches when i started puting him in the hunts. the way you described your pup fits mine to a t. at that age. mine has alot of the same blood on the top side. they are smart!! Homer bred dogs. but stuborn too.

Bottom line for me is, I think people give up on dogs too soon. Dogs have problems and they need to just grow up and mature or either if they are grown dogs they need to be trained a little but people ( like me) have gave up dogs they should not have gave up on. Then later on they are way better dogs and many times I don't think the owner done anything special but they a lot of times just waited on the dog to mature and kept hunting them.

okay buddy you take the advice every yahoo on the board gives you and apply it to your pup. I'll bet you don't have half the dog by the time your finished as this seven month old pup. If you do ask for any advice on here you have to weed threw all the bs first. what about when guys tell u to knock out every coon your pup trees then the next guy telling you if you knock to many out they'll start coming up slick dang they can't both be right now can they.
