-- How Do you all pick a pup? (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928421097)
If possible
When I pick a pup I look for markings or patterns similar to the mother, father or grandparent of the cross I like the most and hope that parent's genetics are more dominant.
Example, If I really like the female better than the male side I'll pick the pup that looks like the mom. If I really like a grandma of a particular cross I'll pick the one that has looks/markings that may resemble grandma.
desire to get to momma!!
Well,I do something that has for the most part worked for me. My whelpin kennel is away from the regular kennel and has 2 - 4 x 4 box's in a utility shed with outside kennels attached. What I watch for is which pup gets out of that box and looks for momma when she starts to wean them off. I put a board across the bottom of the box opening so pups can't wonder out when to small and not be able get back in. The pup that climbs over that 9' tall board to get to thier momma always grabs my attention. Shows desire and drive to get what it wants and that's milk from momma. You put it back in box, before you know it,it's right back out. I always keep an eye out for the 1st to 3rd pup gettin over that wall and gettin to momma! Might not meen a thing but seems to!! Works for me!!

May seem odd but the old timers I have hunted with swear by opening the pups mouth and looking at the roof of their mouth. The more black supposedly the better they will be.

That literally made me laugh out loud

PUPS
I am new to coon huntting. But I have had all kinds of animals over the years. I showed goat s chicken s and dogs. I picked what I was looking for.The hen put body the cock put colors And abilities. I took what I got and said what do I want 10 years from now .Not next week. And I let alot of winners go because they did not fit me. LOOK dont put all your eggs in one basket. Spend time if you can with them. Looks ant all there is.If you want a show dog . Go for pretty. If you want a good dog . Take it out. See how it acts. See how it minds. See if it fits what you want. Then forget it and pick the runt.

I am like John Wick I guess. Lol. I will even sale the last one if someone wants it. I learned , at least for me, it's better to sale them all then take the money from the litter and go buy the best one back after someone else raised it fed it got paperwork done and got it heavy started. I just raising a litter for one pup anyway and that theory works for me. Looks pay no part of the equation to me. They are just an added bonus in my opinion

Get a Good One
the way I breed my dogs ,linebreed for as much house chief as can get ,most are goodlooking so looks are last .
I watch the pups for the one sitting back and takeing everthing in and by the time they are 5-6 weeks old I have to turn on the electric fence wire at top and bottom, cause they start wanting out the puppy pen and will climb over or dig under,,
most time the first ones over the top are usually the ones with that look in their eyes scopeing the others out.
I heard house chief could top a 10ft chainlink fence in the bat of an eye,, must be were my dogs get from as don't have to help them find their way past a fence..
my puppypen.
