As opposed to simpleminded barking at nothing. Why else would they pause, it aint like they are barking so mad they need to catch their breath. Either way they don't need to be barking for either reason.
It's just like when I could tell a storm was coming in with the one dog. The way she barked before I could hear the storm was the same as when, later, it arrived close enough so I could hear it.
Do not be sorry, I could absolutely care less what you "buy"... this is what I saw my dogs do. I am not saying anyone else's do the same or even a similar thing. I do sincerely hope you are able to get past this post, it was not meant to be personal or upset you in any way.

I'm not upset at all and never took it personal.Just never made sense to me.I guess because my dogs never bark unless someone they don't know come in the yard and when I go out to get them to go hunting they will bark a couple times.I can't stand and won't own a dog that barks or howls unless it has a reason to and I can see the reason.Thats just me.

It's strange how they do that...I have never figured out what makes them do it and when. It seems like I see it just before a full moon but I have heard it on dark nights too. About once a month or so in my neighborhood. Even the two dogs I have that never do it are out of their box and paying attention to the others. If we could only talk dog....
The first thing I would say is: "don't run nothing but a coon"
The second: "just stay there and keep on barking, I will get to you eventually"

May sound strange but this is true. Years ago i had two pups that were brothers. They didnt bark in the pen or cause any issues. one night i was hunting Dud and he got killed on the road. When i came home and told my girlfriend she said did that happen about 9 oclock and i said yes why. She said that Pretty Boy started cryin like he was hurt down in the kennel and sounded so bad she went down to see if he was ok. She said he was just sitting in the pen and kind of like a howling cry. He wouldnt hunt or even leave my side for about 3 months.

DanD, I was hunting one night years ago. i wanted to rerun a coon so instead of shooting the coon out i decided to cut the tree down and let the dog run the coon again. it didn't go while. the trunk of the tree landed on my best dog and killed her. as i pulled her out from under the tree, the other dogs were walking on her as if she were nothing. it seemed they had no regard for her, her death or that she was even there. all the while i was crying and yelling I'm sorry.

After researching howling is a territorial thing with coyotes, typically done by the alpha male.

I got a female that will howl from time to time. She rarely barks in the kennel, but for some reason she will get to howling every now and then. When she does the other 3 jump in and howl with her. Don't bother me and it only last a few minutes when she does. The way I see it, they are dogs and dogs howl.
