Well here is my 2 cents...2 of the studs mentioned in this post I think have what it takes to throw the kind of blue dogs we all want and wish we had. The Zero dog that Casey owns and the Cash dog that Mr Smalls owns..although I may be a lil biased since I own the suede dog that is breed to zero and she is a full litter mate to cash.. but I am beyond excited about this cross. Should be quick, accurate and loud hard tree dogs.

I would agree, that's a cross to be proud of. They should be nice

Not trying to be a smarta$$, but what is the benchmark?

The only common measuring stick we have is the Nite Hunts. Take that a step further, there are certain hunts/KC's that draw the top dogs in the country that win/have won the most at a National level. Now, ask what Blue dogs are consistently being entered against that level of competition? Take that a step further, what Blue dogs have a proven track record of cast wins against that level of competition? You would probably be hard pressed to come up with a couple dozen names, male or female.

Without a common benchmark, there is way too wide of a variety of human interpretation involved. You know the drill .... what one thinks is scalding fast on track may be considered common by another.

Track speed is probably not super high on the list of traits that win hunts.

I sure like it though.

All good points, food for thought. Let's keep this thread going! I'd love (along with many others) to see more studs getting campaigned in the bigger hunts.

Me too! I know that a dog can become "too valuable" to hunt, and many times the man with a nice stud is trying to push his offspring. But i Look alot harder at the stud continuing to prove himself in the woods than just the stud pen. Zero & Ace stand out to me right now.

Change up

What studs out there are stacked up with the most:

Top reproducers
Proven great crosses
Top winners (either UKC or $KC)

Stud?

To the original post, look at what happened to many stains of the Walker breed. They bred the track out of them and most of them became slick treeing fools. Not all but most! my opinion most of it comes from the female so first start off with a female that's worthy of breeding. One that will improve the breed. Go at this with full pockets with no exceptions. Find the very best there is out there! Go hunt with them! Yes everyone wants to hear that dog crush a tree from locate to gun shot but to do so accurately ( as many have mentioned ) I honestly think it starts with a dog that can handle a track. Casey Bigelow probably said it best. Best dog I ever owned was by no means a great tree dog but could handle any track she came across. Cold, hot, and even lay ups. It didn't matter! She was also the most consistent and accurate dog ive ever been in the woods with. I will hopefully be able to hunt with Zero in Nov-Dec timeframe so I will have an opinion of him. From what I've HEARD and been looking into as well there's several that are nice. Zero, Leon, pink Floyd, Boomer, and Paizon. Look for what Vic Stroll said earlier. A dog that has won against big names, one that's been in the big hunts, and one that's won all over the country. Last one being important to me. Good luck in your search.
