Their hunt??? What about my hunt???? If the dog is so shy it wont come to me when it's time to go home and cannot be trained to do so then it is no good to me.
I know you believe you can train out all the problems of the dog world, and that is a good thing...I would way rather sell one of my puppies to a guy like you {if I was a breeder} at least I know they would get as best a shot at it as they could get.
Thankfully, there are not very many severely shy dogs out there...but I have seen a handful in my time that just would not be changed. I would very much like to have the time I wasted on them back to use on a better prospect.

I always train my dogs in recall before hunting them, so I have never had this issue. I would expect it to be extremely frustrating though. I have had pups that wouldn't quit hunting, and not come in because they didn't want to go home, but I never faulted them for that too much, even though it made me mad.

She's gotten where she trees pretty hard and I didn't want to shock her or switch her at the tree and take a chance on messing up her treeing. She isn't shy but she isn't a dog that you can whip the crap out of and send her charging back out to hunt.Id appreciate any ideas how to turn her attention to coon. Thx. GC
some would love to have a good opossum hound. it can be lots of fun. pa has a year round season! just something to think about.

Pam thanks ,She'd make a world class possum hound! LOL Shes a good dog but walking through 400 yards of swamp to a possum is hard to take. Hoping she'll come across a good scent one of these nights and get it straightened out. Sorry I didn't mean to hijack this mans thread .GC

I had one dog that loved possum, I never got him broke, but I did shock him every time I saw one, nothing crazy just hard enough to let them know it was unacceptable. It did not effect his treeing what so ever. It did help deter his desire to tree them.

Fisher I'm guessing the dog did start treeing coon since you kept him . Was the dog any good? Was it trashy on other stuff or just possum? i sure like this dog , great acting easy handling goes hunting and is tone broke. She was 600 yards the other night and I bump that tone button and she came right in. She just love the slick tails. Time will tell I guess.gc

If she isn't treeing coon yet, I wouldn't worry about it. Once she is treeing coon consistently, then I will start breaking her off of unwanted game.
