I was spectater on a cast with jerry and spanky when he qualified spanky for the world hunt...
told steve conger that night spanky was going be hard to beat and most likely win which he did,,

spanky would drop out of a race and come treed with the meat, turned him back in and he caught back up and dogs split treed with the meat in both trees.

after first drop jerry could tell you what your dog was doing even if you didn't know..

if jerry is back in the game an shows up with jack russel on his lead,,my money is on jerry to win .

The best hound I have ever seen in a nite hunt was unsnapped by Jerry Winn. That hound gave me a lesson, and a lot of others too.He was a flag tail walker, treed coon like a squirrel dog.If Jerry is following it around, it's a coondog!.

several years ago I drew out in a 3 dog cast with the best bluetick I have ever seen. It was out of a Girard KS hunt and I was hunting a dog named Timber Valley WY ( a sister to my Loose dog) I had been hunting the toenails off of her and had her worn to a frazzle, so true to her form she was preforming at her peak and was looking pretty dang salty.

also in the cast was Troy Cornell hunting one of his and Blaze Bauer's B&Ts. Troy was judging and we both got a come to jesus meetin from that little gyp.

I cant remember if it was 45min or 1hr and 15min......but anyway there was a lot of time left and we were a LONG ways from the truck. this gyp had just crammed I think it was 3 coons up separate trees alone while ours was "booticking" an old track on the creek :/.

at one point he cut her back in and she fell treed not 20 feet from him and had her 3rd coon of the night. we were still standing under the tree she had her 2nd coon in when she did it.

Troy said he had had enough and asked me if I had. I told him I had seen all I needed to see too lol....we decided to catch the dogs and walk the time out back to the truck if it was ok with the bluetick guy. he agreed but kept saying "guys there is a lot of hunt left and sooner or later she is going to screw up"

Troy or I one told him we weren't going to bet on it and we were sufficiently WHIPPED. the guy only needed a 2nd to finish her out and there was only 2 casts out so he finally gave up and let us go to the truck to lick our wounds and whip our dogs (ok we just thought about that second part)

each time she treed a coon troy or I would UP the offer on that gyp even though we both hunted other breeds. we were at I think it was 5K (all our bank accounts would allow atm) by the time we left him at the road.

I gave him my number though and told him to think of a number and call me ( I was willing to mortgage the farm if needed) but he never called.

its like the curse of the great bambino..........lots of 2nd,3rds and 4ths........never a world champ. so I would say the ingredients are there. One thing I have thought is we need more groups of hard hunters packing a dog all over and getting it acclimated to COMP. HUNTS instead of WEEKEND COON HUNTS

I hunted against a little Blue female in the 1 yr old S/S this past week that looked as good as any walker up there. James Tirey was handling her and she was owned by a guy from Alabama. So yes the genes are there.

10 - BLU 9.5%
14 - B&T 13.5%
17 - ENG 16%
1 - PLT 1%

Total -105

Give me those chances all day on a walker and I would take them.

I believe its more the shear number of walkers being campaigned versus any other breed.

This means that a Bluetick should win every decade or so.

that doesnt make sense you only have to beat the dogs in your cast not all 100.

by the %s here blueticks should win 10x more world hunts than plotts..........for better or worse though, plotts have HAD a world ch (1988) and blue nada.

though it also means a plott should also win about once every 100 yrs

I didn't know anything had ever won it but walker or English.i thought may be there were going to start reg cross bred dogs where the walkers would have comp.

ya a plott dog named Cannons Kansas Sizzlin Heat won it in '88......at least I think it was 88, my memory isn't what it used to be. Though for the first 6yrs of his life, the same dog was known as Jiggs.

I still believe Heat's brother, Howell's Bayou Saber, was the better coondog and reproducer.........but alas it was Heat who "won"

I have owned one Bluetick in my life. He was out of some no name stuff, and was raised from a 6 month old by a friend of mine. When he was a year old he loved running fast game, and the guy gave him to me to break him, which I never really did. All I broke him from was running it all night. He started to fall off that fast stuff and tree coons quick, so when I called my buddy and told him I did all the breaking I would ever do he up and gave me the dog.

He was a one bark tree dog that you could put on the card as soon as he located, accurate, had hunt for miles, and was a pressure tree dog. I sold him to a fellow member of this site as a three year old where to my knowledge he did plenty of winning. That was the only bluetick I have ever hunted with that I thought could win a large hunt, and if I had him today I would not hesitate to spend the $1000 for a truck entry with him. He was a freak of the breed as far as I can tell.

Not everybody that owns a horse is trying to win the Kentucky Derby. Some people just enjoy riding a horse.

What a coincidence. I have three mules that I ride. And I have one blue tick that will never win the world hunt. But I enjoy her and the mules immensely.

If a person says that the Blue dogs don't have a chance to win because they are outnumbered, that is the same as saying that 10 of those Walker entries don't have a chance to win either because they are outnumbered, when in fact they have the same chance to win as the other 49 Walkers.

I personally think that if some adjustments are made to breeding philosophy's within the Bluetick breed that better Blue hounds can and will be produced. I see some of that happening now within the breed. Studying pedigrees, and the traits, of a lot of the Walkers has shown me that the mixtures of bloodlines that they put together are producing the types of dogs that can and do win the cream of the crop competition hunts. It is each individual breeders decision and choose whether they want to follow some of those patterns or stand by the old breeding patterns of the past. Breeding for what we had, and not for what we can get will continue to hold the breed back if not corrected.

World Champion Bluetick

I thought this was another April fools joke. Who would have thought there would be a serious conversation about a bluetick winning the world? Good luck to you all.

I have a buddy down the road from me that has a pair of blueticks and I tell you those 2 can tree some coons.

Ninety nine percent of the people that have aspirations of winning the world hunt are hunting Walkers. Most of the people that are heavily into competition hunting are hunting Walkers. A term that I seldom see on this forum is "pleasure hunting". The hunters that are into competition hunting are mostly using Walkers. The rest stayed with their blue ticks, redbones, and black and tans. They don see their breeds as being deficient in any way. They are pleasure dogs that can win hunts at times. This might sound silly to some of you, but their are some hunters who don't shock their dogs for covering a dog that is treed. They are enjoying a "pleasure hunt" and not setting up situations to make their dogs get off by themselves. Nor are some of them breeding for dogs that get treed in the next county.

I've been hunting Walkers since 1965. I'm not bashing them. I'm not bashing any breed. I have a blue tick now. Since I'm only pleasure hunting I thought it would be more enjoyable for me to hear the dog run and tree the coon instead of finding him treed somewhere. Not saying all Walkers are like this, but in the last 25 years mine were.
