We run coyote in the winter, our coyote dogs will run a red fox occasionaly, hard to tell sometimes until you see em,they circle pretty much the same.

john, how long does a typical chase last? how do you get your dogs back? do they get tired and give up or can you call them off?
in my case, the fox will just get farther and farther ahead of the dogs that they just have more and more trouble finding the track and get discouraged, or I catch them when they cross a road. my dogs are actual fox hounds. they're just a couple of trashing hounds and a couple of trashing curs.

No two are the same, we mostly hunt on snow so we drive around right at sunup to try and cut a track that the dogs can run, if that dont work we send a guy in with a dog that will take a cold track and see if we can get one up and runnin, then we will drop in some more dogs.
They all run different, some will bayup in 20 minutes and some will run for 8 hours. Some will circle in the same block over and over so you can get a couple shooters in the end things, and some will line out and take the dogs 15 or 20 miles.
Its a ton of fun,we usually have a couple guys in trucks to get ahead of the race to stop traffic if they cross a road, but like everything else with hounds it gets harder every year not to get the cops called on ya by a treehugger.
Once they are up and runnin most yotes arent more than 20 yards ahead of the dogs, if the dogs make a lose the yote slows right down or stops and watches his backtrack until the dogs catch up, its almost like a game to them. I have seen dogs take one into a patch of brush and come out the other side runnin a different yote without ever missin a beat, They are SMART critters.

Red fox are more likely to stick in one block for ya, and as a general rule dont bust out into the open unless they are really being pushed hard.

John, Thanks for the run down on your fox chasing. I think I've seen much of the same thing. At the time I didn't know what to think of things and I'd be left scratching my head. I have been able to get ahead of the dogs and waited for them to come out, expecting to see game. Usually nothing but the dogs came out. The game was so far ahead of the dogs. But I have seen fox a few times come out ahead of the dogs.
