Im 32 years old and been hunting since i was 12.It wasnt cause of my Dad but my cousins great uncle. He would pick me and my cousin everytime him and his friends went. They hauled our butts everywere.Thene when i was 14 my mom started dating again and i lucked up to get the best stepdad i could get.His father hunted and and we went all the time.I didnt get my first dog until then and it was from my new step grandfathers friend.Best day of my life when i got first pick of the litter.3 months later that old man died and his wife contacted us and said when he was in the hospitol he told her to give his best dog to that boy he give a pup to if something happened to him.She did and i was set on my way.My female i have now goes back to those dogs that old man gave me.THIS IS WHAT IT TAKES GUYS!Show you give a darn, put forth effort with the kids.My son just turned 8 and is hunting with me.His life dont revolve around a game cause i take the time.He gets home from school and messes with the dogs.If it wasnt for these great men in my life i wouldnt be doing this, and not a one of them were my blood. The last thing is all the negative people i hear on the computer talking.Stop bashing and if a kid has a question you need to break your neck to help them.Last i checked were all in this together so lets act like it.

I was lucky in that a handful of old coonhunters and breeders took me in when I was young and taught me to be a houndsmen. I was the first in my direct family to be one in 4 generations (my great grandpa Bill Anglin raised blueticks before and right after they were separated as a breed from the English) Had it not been for those guys like Nick Oster Kelly Stagner and George Leer..........I would have most likely never got started.

Those old hunts sound like a blast and a good way to keep kids coming. What I meant by "gimmicks" was having a "fun day" like the State youth hunts (which are alot of fun). Then forget about the kids another year. The most important thing you can do is have that personal relationship with them.

In reading most of the responses looks like most know what i am saying. The 16year old young man said it best. " Just take me hunting".

Another thing I have noticed, UKC.
The "adult" State hunt result pics are about the middle in Bloodlines and color pics. The youth state hunt results are hid in the back with black and white pics. Like their win doesn't mean as much. Just looking at from a young persons perspective.

Bayemup34- " Just take me hunting". I like that!

I have a 20 yr old son in college and a 15 yr old daughter in high school. I started taking my son coonhuntin when he was around 4 yrs old and my daughter started going at around 8-10 yrs old. To me it's like sports or anything else. If they don't have an adult to encourage them and make it fun for them, they will never stick with it. I think the next biggest thing is for it to be fun. Hopefully you can tree a coon most of the time when they go but if not you can still make it fun. Have food for them to eat and make sure they're warm and let them bring a friend if they want. It's all in what you make it. One thing is for sure, if we never take them or we make it a bad experience for them when we do, they're probably going to be a lot more apt to spend their time wanting to do something different. In this day and time that something different aint always good.

Stop the cheating, intimidation and bullying, PERIOD!!!!! We all know it happens but for fear of pissing off the good ol boy network, nothing happens. The notion that video games and stuff like that are the key is a clear indication of the disconnect from what really goes on at alot of hunts. Alot of it is very blatant and again, no one does anything about it. There's tons of bias, hook ups, and outright cheating. Advantage is taken of the young ones, and if someone knows the rules or see's whats happening and throws the BS flag then out comes the intimidation. Again we've all seen it but few say anything about it. Likely for fear of retribution. The key is to make them young'uns feel welcomed, show the sense of pride in your sport and pass along the knowledge instead of keeping it to ones self, you can't use it the grave. Teach'em its OK to lose and that winning comes from putting the leg work, not through cheating. Git rid of all that BS and you'll see a turn around. Run the clowns away that harbor all that BS and you'll see a turn around. Hold people accountable for their actions and stick it out and you'll see a turn around. It's simple math fellas, clean house and you'll breathe new life into our sport while making it much more enjoyable for everyone.
