I agree, one a night or week or even every two weeks. But give us something during the summer!! I ruined a good young dog one year when season went out I stopped shooting coons. In one month he went from 70% accurate to 35% accurate cause he thought treeing was his reward?? Since then I have tried to keep some fur in their mouth to keep them going the right direction. Not anymore, I am going back to shooting ZERO coons till season comes in. We will see what kind of a hound I have with no fur in his mouth???
WE NEED A LONGER KIL SEASON!!
FARMERS WOIULD APPRECIATE IT, TURKEY HUNTERS AND DEER HUNTERS SHOULD ALSO. COONS EAT CORN IN THE FIELD, OUT OF DEER, CATTLE, AND HOG FEEDERS, AND TURKEY EGGS, PLUS WHEN ACORNS ARE ON, THEY EAT THIOSE BEFORE THEY HIT THE GROUND FOR DEER. C,MON MAN,GIVE US YEAR ROUND SEASON LIKE ARKANSAS!!!

To me .. I thought anyone that's trained their share of young dogs know that if you have a kill fest to a young dog one night you better prepare yourself for some blanks the next night , that's where you correct the dog , if possible , or cull it after you've given it a good chance. Simple as that. Imo killing coon can bring out the best and worst in a dog , and when the worst comes out that is the opportunity to train. The dogs that I own currently can be fed coon all winter and go all summer without being fed a single coon at all . Different strokes for different folks I guess

What dogs have you trained that have won World Hunts ? Not trying to be smart , just curious about what dogs you are talking about.

Not to get further off the subject of the post which was suppose to be about the length of kill season. But if I understand this right everyone is saying that if u shoot coon out to your COON dog then you will ruin him and may as well shoot him/cull if you want to put it that way?
I have never understood this idea that killing coons out to a dog has any kind of positive effect. And killing coons out of season just upsets me to end no end. I don't even carry a gun during kill season. Me motto is "let'um live to run again!"

I basically am a pleasure hunter. Have attended very few competition events. But my hunting buddy who I hunt with 2 or 3 nights a week does compete. He has won over $200,000 in PKC. Won a new pickup truck. Won countless events in other registries including some of the big events. Won the Pro Run Off and honestly won to many hunts for me to remember. Last year he won approx $17,000 in 2 invitational events. The dog he is hunting has treed hundreds and hundreds of coon this past year. I feel certain that he has not shot more than 10 or 15 coon to this hound including the kill season. So you can see why the kill every coon philosophy doesn't work for me. A true champion and finished dog wants nothing but to tree the coon and getting to do that is reward enough.
To get back on subject, I think our hunting and running season in Indiana is fine the way it is.

Everyone that says they r not shooting coons seem to be referring to an old dog. I am referring to any unfinished hound. It would be nice to be able to shoot a coon to the unfinished hound "when the person hunting the dog feels the dog could use some fur in its mouth", not kill every coon a dog trees for its entire life
I try to be a responsible hunter, when I tree a litter in the winter, I will shoot a kitten out and skin it even though I know it is worth only $1. I never shoot the sow and I will never shoot more than one coon out of a tree. I enjoy training young dogs and it is really hard to train then if they don't get a little fur along the way.
I completely understand the finished dog and not shooting coons because they don't need them. I am taking about unfinished hounds and attempting to train them in summer.

I do not shoot coon out of season , I did not know there was a season any more on them.
Keven now I see why you asked me what you did.
So to bring the thread back on track, yes a longer kill season would be nice to allow hunters to drop the fur they deem required to the dogs they are hunting without resorting to illegal activities to do so.
Not much value for a hide hunter as the current season encompasses the best of the fur quality very well currently..
And some of the folks hunt sure 'nuff world champion go getters that merely the thought of getting treed is enough to satisfy that inner coon dog craving..
LOL wonder how many of those thousands of trees that dog trees in a lifetime has a coon in it?
Have a great sunday all!!!
season
I could of sworn Hyde told me the IN.season was open year round. Has been for years according to him. LOL
im with jim on thissn,
the season is closed boys. leave those guns at home.
