I think you are right and i suspect it is because of a combination of all the parasites you guys down south have to deal with and all the worming regimines and preventatives your dogs are on. Lets face it worm medicine is poison, the idea is to kill the parasites without killing the host but i bet all those drugs dont do a dogs liver any good. I dont know how many years its been since i heard of anyone local having a dog with heartworm and even then it was a dog that came up from the south, but the vets keep pushing folks to use preventitive.
Now we have the thyroid deal, nobody knew a dog had a thyroid until a few years ago, now i know guys who have multiple dogs takeing pills for the rest of their life, and lots of guys pushin ivermec to their dogs on a monthly basis. Maybe these things arent an issue for me because i only keep a couple dogs but i have not wormed a dog in years and my dogs are worm free.
An interesting statistic would be the difference in lifespan between our dogs today with all the expensive feed and drugs we use compared to the dogs of 50 years ago that lived on table scraps and never saw a vet.

So basically a raw diet vs dry feed. Google it, it's debated all over the web. I'm sure though our dogs in general live much longer. Think about it, I hear of people dropping 3 grand on a surgery all the time where years ago the dog would have been put down, with out another thought.
