well I'm not so sure my dogs won't run a deer. when I going home or to some other location and the dogs strike from the box, I don't release them for fear that they might be scenting a deer. I do have one dog, a red tick that loves to run, that will probably run a deer.

How many times
How many times did they start to tree then move on?
Mink can be tricky and the will go all night long. I had one of my hounds years back that ran one of those red hot tracks for about an hour! Then he started to tree, he treed for about 10 minutes and the race was back on! This went on for about 8 hours. He went across a creek down along the ditch of a road, back through a tall grass field then up through some timber, then ran it down to the creek. Me the whole time following like an idiot. (before the whole gps system) The whole time I could smell this musky oder around in the woods and along the creek. Well 8 hours later(sun was coming up) I guessed which way the dog was headed and jumped him and caught him.
I asked my uncle who has been coon hunting since he was just a little fella what it was and he told me a mink. He said they will run all night climb take a break and then go back at it again. Or if they see your light will bail out.
He told me to walk with a light off in on the dogs and pack a shotgun. When you get close red light and shoot!
I did! And then beat that hound senseless with the mink! It broke him.

That was a great post until I got to the part about beating the hound. Bad, Bad, Bad!

We have mink where I live...they are rare though. I have seen them at night out on the marsh and their eyes glow deep blue in the light. I remember reading somewhere that mink were like number two on the list of scent that most excites a dog. If that is true it's a wonder we don't have more problems with dogs running them. The one thing about them is that the wild ones are kinda small...I don't know how much of a chase they could lead dogs on with legs that are 2 or at the most 3 inches long. Then again I have a little Jack Daniels terrier with 3 inch legs, he can run 22 miles per hour just about all day!!!
croatankid
Remember prolly back before you were born we used to break dogs that way! We did not have fancy shocking systems!!! I do have one now it saves me on my knuckles and feet and the dogs learns faster than they used too!!!!!!!!!!!
