I would breed to a GSP because of the hair, agility, and just everything else. No one wants a mixed up dog with longer hair lol. Not to many people want mixed up dogs anyways.

there are 2 far different types of scent trails, and it takes a different type of dog to fallow them.

1) foot scent. (think bloodhound or a coondog that stands on its head all night)

2) body scent. (think bird dog or a real good layup dog)

the same animal going the same place leaves 2 different trails. one of each of the above. sometimes they overlap sometimes (think wind) the body scent can settle several feet from the actual path the animal took.

Ever see a dog stand on its head all night rootin the ground like a hog trying to work a track out??? that's foot scent and last anywhere from a few hours to days. (bloodhounds for instance)

Ever see a dog stand up on its hind legs swinging its head from side to side.........then go 50+ feet and slam treed (layup) that's body scent. its usualy gone within minutes. that layup ability is comes directly from bird dog blood SOMEWHERE in the hounds past.

Back in the day, I hunted with a guy who had a Bluetick/Pointer cross..He was one hell of a coondog..Not much bark trailing but super hard tree dog.

I do believe Mike was right but I had no idea until was sitting with Tam one night and he told me I believe there was a third male that was grand as well but not 100 percent sure.

I agree with the sent theory. This past winter was horrible, we hunted when it was below 0 and one night in particular I remember a track that my buddy's pup was running. On the way into the tree, you could see where the coon went in the snow, and then about 3-4 feet over you could see where the dog went. He wasn't standing over the actually track the coon made. This pup he has strikes in before any other dog and is a lay-up king. I'm wanting to cross my mnt cur on a GSP or find a walker that is crossed with one to put that BODY sent tracking back in the dog.

Why wouldn't you do this is what I ask?

Why wouldn't you just breed to a real deal coondog that has winding ability.Too me a layup dog is a must in my area and without one there's ALOT of coons that won't get treed.Breeding bird dogs would sure make a hotter nosed dog.Jmo

Agreed. Two thousand stud dogs out there throwing pups of all kind, and people want to go to farmer johns and breed to his shorthair.

so depending on the time frame, that means that walkers and english would have it in them also. another point, bluetickers do alot more linebreeding and there are several different lines that dont show other lines, why will all of them have liver colored crop outs from time to time?

why do english dogs have dark and light colored redticks and why do some walkers have blueticking? what about high tan blackdogs? fact is, just because you have a theory or heard something doesnt mean it is true.

they may have some bird dog in them but I have never seen nor owned one that would point although I have seen more then one walker dog point a bird lol true story

Nobody knows what your gona get when you breed dogs together. If we knew that then we would all have some BA dogs out there. So we can't really say they will have hotter noses or more or less tree power ect....

Just look at some of the post that people have replied back saying that the dogs they have hunted with have been pretty good dogs when crossed on a bird dog. I'm not a big comp guy, I just like to go out and tree squirrels and coons. I absolutely will not have a dog that slick trees on me more than I see fur.

I get why people don't want to crossbreed I understand that. But why not if all ur about is going out and having a good time with your buddies and shooting some grease? It doesn't make a difference to me as long as I can tree some squirrels and coons.

I bought a beautiful dark blue female with a great pedigree a few years ago. I was leading her around a corn field back to the truck and a big bird took off out of the edge of the woods. She locked up in as pretty of a pointer stance that I could imagined. lol. I thought to myself that she might have a great pedigree and is as pretty a bluetick as could be but there is definitely some bird dog in her somewhere.

I just had a litter of full blooded tw pups and one of the pups is liver tan and white colored. Has anyone heard of this or seen it before?

Had a whole litter of walker pups and out popped ole Yeller..They were Rock River Banjo and Logan's Wild Quick bred and all the pups were black and white almost no brown on them at all.. except this one... he was pure liver and white.. and a natural I just let him run loose on the farm and this is a picture of him treed with a coon all by himself out in the back yard.. he was only 5 months old and never even seen a coon before!! For some dumb reason I gave him away and kept his better colored and worthless brother!!

Have saw it many times. Seem to see it a lot in heavily River Bend Flag or Nite Heat bred dogs. It's a throw back from the past supposedly, but it doesn't keem them from being top coondogs for sure.

I'm not claiming to be no exspert but commen sence goes along way.Theres several breeds of hounds and then there's curs.Plenty to choose from without tryin to create some sort of hybrid bird/coon dog.If i wanted a meat dog that trees whatever climbs Id get a cur dog.As long as I don't have to feed them you can do what you want.
